    A tale of two ciders

I guess the infection risk from anything transferred from a fresh paper towel is negligible compared to not having a good seal, correct? If I were paranoid I could get some sealed sterile cotton balls from a pharmacy. If I were paranoid...

    A tale of two ciders

Yep, I'll switch to the rubber stopper and s-style stopper next time I try starter. I've always had trouble with the stoppers not sticking after sanitizing due to being wet. I'll find a way though as I'm 0 for 2 on the screw top plus 3 piece airlock combo.

    A tale of two ciders

After 7 months in the secondary, check out these two ciders. Actually, this is the same cider that came out of the same primary fermenter. I got some farmers market unpasteurized cider and decided to do a 2 gallon batch with English Ale yeast. I had issues with the airlock on the lighter...

    Single Hop IPA experiment

Some IPA recipes I've seen use just Pilsner Malt because it allows the distinctness of the hops to show through. I haven't dried brewing one yet, but I do plan on doing one soon with Falconer's Flight.

My first all grain - seeking better water calculation tools

That simple tool is great! It looks like it's applicable even though I'm not BIAB, but using a regular mash tun. Thanks for the link. Top off after boil would be great. I'm using Revvy's method described here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showpost.php?p=2898334&postcount=2 I don't have the...

    Where are you Brewing?

I brew in a San Francisco condo where space is a premium. The brew process is all in the kitchen on a gas stove. I don't have back yard access, but we do have a small rooftop deck. There is no a/c and it is a top floor unit so the ambient temperature in the summer inside is 74 - 78 degrees...

    Brew Kettle Deals

The only one from BB&B I see is $99. Can you provide the link to the one you are talking about?

    Off Flavor in IPAs

Just a call out from a relative newbie, but isn't it not a great idea to use distilled water to brew counter to some of the suggestions? I read in other threads that it is not great for yeast. Perhaps using a bottled mountain spring water such as Arrowhead would be a better experiment. Along...

My first all grain - seeking better water calculation tools

This weekend I brewed my first all grain, a hoppy pale ale recipe based on my first brew ever that came out great. I have a 10 gallon igloo with a circular false bottom. I did a 60 minute 150 degree rest then batch sparged, vorlaufing after both. I'm pretty happy with the efficiencies for my...

AG with a 4 gallon boil but a 5 gallon batch size

I have figured out on my gas stove I can actually boil 5 gallons, but it is not a vigorous "rolling" boil, more like simmering one. This definitely would affect hot break but means I would only need to add a gallon or less after the boil. I can get 3.5 to 4 gallons at a pretty good boil, so...

    Ballast points sculpin IPA

After weeks of bottle conditioning I can call this recipe a success. But only because it tastes good, not because it tastes like Sculpin. I think between the fact that this was not all-grain and that I substituted Warrior hops to keep the buying of the hops economical and simple it does not...

AG with a 4 gallon boil but a 5 gallon batch size

Resurrecting this thread because I just got my first mash tun set up (a 10 gallon Igloo), but don't have my outdoor burner yet so I am still limited to a partial boil on the stove top (~4 gallon pre-boil volume max). I plan to try out this top-off method that Revvy has mentioned. I just need...

Beginnings of lacto infection or not?

They were indeed some type of particles. It did not increase over 36 hours and everything smelled and tasted normal when bottling. Thanks all.

Beginnings of lacto infection or not?

That's what I was hoping. I was very careful to sanitize everything, and had the spray bottle handy spraying everything that came in contact during the transfer twice for good measure. Are there infections that are hops-tolerant that I should worry about? I'll definitely give it the taste and...

Beginnings of lacto infection or not?

These white powdery looking specs appeared on top of the beer practically overnight. This is day 5 of dry-hopping a Sculpin IPA clone in the secondary fermenter. I was planning to bottle Sunday, but could bottle tonight if it would reduce risk.
