Hops: Should they stay or should they go?

Ha, yeah. I will be tossing them. I just don't want to toss next year's harvest as well.

Hops: Should they stay or should they go?

Hi folks, I have a dilemma. I just got my second year cascade hops from my parent's place (I am a student and move every year and they have a great garden). They harvested over one pound of hops once dried. I did most of the gardening until July, and then they took care of trimming the...

Anyone been to the Heineken factory in Amsterdam or Carlsberg in Denmark?

I went there in 2006 and you are right, the beer just tastes fresher -- I had a new appreciation for heineken after that tour and still have a hard time drinking it in the states because my tastebuds are telling me it's wrong. That may also have something to do with the fact that you are...

1/2 gal brown growlers - where to buy

Thanks, I had found the first in subsequent searching but not the first. I wonder why there seems to be so few brown screw cap growlers? They seem perfect for transporting and not as spendy as those fancy flip top growlers.

1/2 gal brown growlers - where to buy

Hi, I was just curious if anyone had a good suggestion for where to buy half gallon brown screw top growlers. I keg my beer, so this is only for transporting to a friend's place or the like. My local brewpub gives out clear fermenters... grr. This is the only place I've found so far...

    2008 World Beer Cup Winners

Odell's IPA won. That's awesome. It's about the only IPA we get here in South Dakota and I've been a huge fan of it. It's sort of re-affirming for my palate.

How long is to long in secondary

When I traveled for work, I left a beer for 5 weeks in the primary! that is supposed to cause autolysis (dying yeast) and give it a waxy flavor, but it never did. In the secondary you've racked the beer off of the majority of dead yeast cells and as long as you kept it out of the light and...

    Yeast Nutrients?

For a typical gravity beer, there is enough nutrients in the wort. Yeast nutrients is more often used in high gravity beers.

Do I have to do all 5 gallons?

Yes, you can do smaller batches -- 2.5 or even 1 gallon batches of beer. This is a good start, and in the future, it's sometimes a good way to test out new recipes or recipes you aren't sure you will like. For the most part, your recipes will just cut everything in half -- hops, malt, etc...

    The "Economy" of Homebrewing

I should never have posted in this thread. We all homebrew. That means we all value it more than doing something else. Homebrewing wins!

Thin film on top of beer, what is this?

perhaps an infection. but you may be able to get away with it. Sometimes these things grow a little then die because of the alcohol -- and it could even have been growing in your primary but you didn't notice it. It's been conditioning for two weeks? crack on of those babies open, taste it...

Brewed a Blue Moon Clone, but...

Well the good thing for you is that blue moon is actually fermented with an American Ale yeast. Basic Brewing Radio did a segment with the brewmaster for Sandlot brewing (the company that created Blue Moon but is owned by Coors). He said they use a standard california ale yeast -- not even...

    The "Economy" of Homebrewing

Read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opportunity_cost money: The consideration of opportunity costs is one of the key differences between the concepts of economic cost and accounting cost. Assessing opportunity costs is fundamental to assessing the true cost of any course of action. In the case...
