    American Porter Imperial Honey Porter

I posted some some questions about scaling this down and fermenting in the recipes section--and the crickets chirping was I heard in response : ( I know its frowned upon here to repost the same questions in different sections, but I'd like to brew this so its ready to bottle when I get back...

My first Big Beer a Honey Porter--take a look

I have to pause my brewing for a while. I'm being deployed. I’d like to try a bigger beer Barleywine / Braggot using my BIAB setup now that I have it dialed in. I brewed a 1 gal braggot last fall with LME and it’s OK, I’d to make one AG now. I know this will need bottled and...

First Mead, so far so good. Help me keep it that way

Thanks, it's good to know I'm on the right track. Machalel: Yep, that's exactly the type of bottle I have on hand. My son is US Air Force in Germany and he sent me a few boxes of his empties. Insomniac: I used camden tabs with my first couple of batches of cider (my wife's new favorite...

First Mead, so far so good. Help me keep it that way

Last Oct (2011) I made my first mead. It was half of a cyser from page 168 of K Schramm's The Compleat Meadmaker: 4lb honey (heated only enough to dissolve in the cider) .5lb brown sugar .5lb raisins 2.5 gal fresh cider (unpasteurized) Lalvin EC-118 yeast OG: 1.102 FG: 1.004 mar...

Anyone use bayou classic steam basket when brewing BIAB?

Here's pics of my first BIAB setup with a smaller basket https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/all-grain-biab-fgs-high-how-do-i-correct-284534/. I've since made a new grain bag that fits the basket that came with my 15gal Bayou classic. With the smaller basket, I too had the same issues with the...

All Grain & BIAB FGs are high How do I correct?

This is the one thing I've already corrected. I have the correct inner basket for my 15gal Bayou Classic pot. It can be seen in the background of the picture showing the ground malt. I also have a bigger grain bag that is as big as the ID of the basket. Thanks for the comments! I'll keep...

    Aerating The Wort

Check this podcast out. iTunes - Podcasts - The BN Presents - Brew Strong by Justin Crossley IIRC O2 @ 2l/min for a minute will give you over 15ppm O2. as opposed to room air maxing out between 8-10ppm after 20 minutes. I have access to O2 as well, and I'm still working on my setup. I even...

All Grain & BIAB FGs are high How do I correct?

I have brewed 2 AG BIAB batches this fall. My first recipe can be found here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/going-ag-via-biab-1st-recipe-review-277246/ The 2nd was a porter I brewed trying to make an Edmund Fitz clone. The trend I’m seeing (I know, 2 data points can hardly “trend”) is my FG...

Going to AG via BIAB: 1st recipe for review

Thanks everyone! I've adjusted the recipe to reflect your input. My son is due home on leave before heading to Germany (his first duty assignment) I hope we can brew this while he's home. I just need my mill to show up! (insert sound of toes tapping impatiently)

Going to AG via BIAB: 1st recipe for review

I altered the hops to keep the IBUs similar. If I cut back on the victory malt, then is the best thing to just add it back in the pale malt--9.5lb pale, .5 victory? It's probably splitting hairs and my taste buds probably won't know the difference, just wondering aloud.

Going to AG via BIAB: 1st recipe for review

Thanks My losses, since I do not (yet) have a march pump to recirculate the wort during the mash should be twofold: during the boil and grain absorption. Correct? I'm kinda dialed in to achieve a 1gal boil-off using a 20gal bayou classic BK (borrowed); I've bought a 15gal bayou classic BK...

Going to AG via BIAB: 1st recipe for review

Ok, I’m making the next step to AG via BIAB. So far, I’ve been extract brewing except for one AG brew. My first brew I’m throwing out for review because I’m sure I’m over thinking it, and given the differences between How to Brew and the iPhone app BrewPal, I want...

    Help with hops and utilization

Thanks for the help. Double D: Yeah the hops bags were small about the size of standard man's crew sock. Although they were always under water and given the darkness of the wort--out of site--during the boil. From now on, I'm just throwing the hops--pellet or whole--into the brewpot and...

Big difference between 1/4" and 3/8" diameter wort chiller?

Yep, Law of Laplace guides us here--r to the 4th power and all that. My head is hurting already from flashbacks of the physics classes. Go for the biggest diameter you can get. My homemade wort chiller was less than $50 for 50ft of 3/8', tubing, hose fittings and such. Buy once, cry once...

    Help with hops and utilization

Hi all, I’ve been lurking here a while, but I finally pulled the trigger, signed up, and bought a membership. I’ve done mostly extract brews (about 8) with only one all-grain batch—on borrowed equipment—since January. My last brew was the American Stout out of BCS (pg 173). What (I...
