Filling barrel

Filling barrel

12.5% RIS into a Bourbon Barrel

How did this setup work for you? Did you experience any issues racking out of it, or is that monster still sitting in the barrel? Also, where did you get that little inline ball valve for the racking cane. I like that.

Turned out awesome. Finished at 12.5%. 4 months in the barrel was perfect. I entered it in a local comp recently and it got 2nd and scored a 45

"BORIS" in smoke and wood.
The set-up worked great. Woodinville Bourbon barrel with a #7.5 stopper. I can pressurize the barrel to 3-4 psi so I know it's CO2 purged before filling and can counter pressure transfer out.
The ball valve came from Micromatic

Thanks. A barrel project is on my to do list. I'm just leery about using a small barrel due to the heavy oak and oxygen permeability of smaller barrels, but large barrels require a group effort (or a back to back to back to back to back brew day, with my setup).

You can get around the small barrel issues. Do a pre-soak with a holding solution to reduce the oak and use paraffin wax on a portion of the outside to reduce oxygen.
