Here you can see the cast iron connector used on the uprights. Right now I have two 6' sections of the 1/2" black iron pipe joined end to end. About 18" of the uprights is in the ground, so the overall height is about 10.5 feet. Accounting for the sag of the top wire, we are looking at maybe 9-9.5 of height for the bines to stretch out. If I want to, I can get another pair of couplers and add more length to the uprights next season. I can also break down the existing uprights for easier storage over the winter months. In fact, the whole hop trellis system can be stowed in a very small corner of the shed or basement closet.
