I washed the inside of my 5 gallon glass carboy with a small amount of dish soap. I then thoroughly rinsed with tap water before filling the carboy with star San and letting it soak for about 10 minutes, swishing it around and adding more star San periodically. Will this effect the head retention of my finished beer?

that shouldn't hurt your beer if you rinsed it ALL off. but why use soap? they say not to and there's plenty of cleansers for cleaning brewing equipment and vessels available.

It was all I had on hand and I didn't realize that it could be an issue until it was too late. What do you use?

i use one step or oxiclean free to clean, star san to sanitize.

with glass, the soap shouldn't be an issue IF you can rinse all the residue off. hot water then a star san solution should do that for ya.

A recent Basic Brewing podcast was on head retention and Dr. Charlie Bamforth (the "Professor of Foam"). In the episode he mentions that keeping your glasses clean by washing them in a mild dish detergent and fully rinsing them is important. So, as long as you gave your carboy a good rinsing I wouldn't worry about a thing. I wash all of my fermentation vessels with dish soap and I have problems with head retention.

Did you really mean to say that in the carboy not to worry about it but, that you use dish soap and DO have head retention problems?

I have used dishsoap in my carboys and have never had a problem with head retention. You DO need to make sure you rinse it well. Unfortunately, rinsing dishsoap from a carboy is a pain. I find it a lot easier to just use c-brite or some other cleaner.

For what it's worth, I feel the less you have to handle your glass carboys, the better... :)
