I find it odd that our employee cafeteria serves decent (not amazing, but edible) food, while our patient cafeterias do not.

Best thing I ever did for my brewing was to enter a beer into a comp that got a bad score. Why was it such a good move? I knew the beer wasn't great, but wasn't really sure why. I got a comment back that was really a question "do you use chlorinated tap water to brew?" I did...but that was the last time. It prompted me to look into water chemistry to build from RO. The point is, you may get a comment that exposes the problem with your beer that you never considered.

I entered the same beer into the same comp one year later (with good water) and it scored a 35. Respectable...

Thanks guys.. maybe I will. I just read about the style though, according to BJCP guidelines and it doesn't look good if that is what they base things on. Oh well.

even if you get knocked points for not being true to style, you will still get honest feedback on others aspects of the beer that could be improved. What comp is it?

Amber Waves of Grain. If I had known this one would be ready perfectly in time for it, I would've tried some things to better it... though I should've anyway. I don't know. Would've at least dry hopped it. Ugh. Think I'm going to do it, though I'm stuck on registration because I don't have a name for it haha. Never thought my beers were really worth naming.

Agreed. Even with my 35 score, I had comments that it was a "little sweet for the style", which dinged it points. But, it was a blonde that I brewed with vanilla...I intended for it to be a little sweet. So, I was even more satisfied that I "done good". The exact comment from the more experienced judge was "Delicious, but I have to knock off points for not being to style due to residual sweetness. Very good beer."

    I was happy.

Exactly this. I was knocked on a saison last summer for not being to style but was then asked if I could email her the recipe haha

Saison have style guidelines? It's pretty clear From the history of Saisons that there were never any such thing. I'm buzzing from 1 bomber of my Rye Farmhouse I should have eaten something today.

Haha very true, but of course Americans had to come up with the "style" so we can say what is and what isnt. It was just knocked for not being dry enough which is totally understandable for a saison.

I guess without style guidelines judges can't "judge" in a competition.

Quick pint. Just witnessed a guy get asked to leave (the room) during a meeting by a company officer during said guy's powerpoint. And we all went through the rest of his sub-par presentation ourselves. So embarrassing.

@hawgwild81 - that's scary stuff. Hope the baby is well!

Baha! I've seen this happen too... it's like, "What? Didn't you know the subject matter beforehand? Could you have put a little more effort into this? How long have you been here?"

    Eff.

That reminds me to check my emails... Hopefully didn't send any professors my true thoughts about their classes. But that's honestly kinda wild. I ended up cooking like a dozen eggs, pirogues and a pound of bacon but no emails haha View attachment ImageUploadedByHome Brew1426182332.458188.jpg somehow managed a picture..

Thank you... Made my day actually...
    Lol

Sounds like an urgent care facility.. Which I find funny because there is nothin urgent or immediate about their care.

Muahahahah that's one of the funniest things I've heard I would totally use that also, smart man.

@hawgwild81 bronchitis, pneumonia, RSV, and rhinovirus. Tough break sending my regard for a speedy recovery.

We have to share desks where i work. My co-worker left his cell phone on the desk last night (with 6 alarms set to go off this morning) so I paired it up with his Oscar Goldman doll and wrote him a little note. And yes. I made him the hat too.

If you can't read it it says
    "Christopher,
I suffer from debilitating separation anxiety. When left alone I set off an alarm every 4.3 minutes. I miss you
    - your phone"
Worst thing is its one of those sealed battery phones and for some reason it cant be turned off without getting through the lock screen.
    I need a beer.

I never got good feedback on my beers. Just the standard crap or like my sour stout. " there is little body. More like a porter".. Yea and a Grand Master called my Brett Saison infected. I have not had good feed back but just ignorance. I never brew to style anyway. :p

Way you label it does have an affect on the score. I havent been happy with the comps I enter. No help at all. Most comments are probably mishandled of the beer. Its worst with meads. i got a few "past its prime" comment. How do you know its past its prime when you never had it

Was he a preemie? They're usually the biggest RSV risk. That was a nerve-wracking experience.

Just name it the name of the style. The only way anyone other than the organizer and sorting crew will see the name is if you medal. There's a couple guys I know of that name everything something like "John's American IPA" or "This Is An American IPA". Simple and effective. It always makes looking at results funny when they medal a bunch of beers.

Yep. The upcoming guidelines have expanded even further since both light and dark variations are covered (previously dark saison was considered a 'Belgian Specialty').

Exactly. Can't score something without a reference point.
