Ok in the middle of a brew here and I went and grabbed my immersion wort chiller and it was green, I scrubbed and scrubbed and got a lot of it off. So I set a brew pot on the stove and boiled it in water and PBW. That water is now blue, and it looks like almost all of the verdigris is gone tried scrubbing the remaining off with out much luck. Is the verdigris going to kill the flavor of the beer if I use this thing?

It potentially could, have you ever dabbed your finger into it and then licked your finger? It has a property akin to battery acid in taste, not something I would want in my beer.

Oh yeah I just retired from the Navy and that **** is all over the Copper Nickel piping. I think I got it all off. Any suggestion on how to prevent it from happening again?

No real way to guarantee it but clean it good when done then dry the piss out of it and store it dry and clean.

At work we have copper bands on the brew system and if any sanitizer or moisture sits for an extended period it forms a layer, this is external so not an issue in the process really just visual.

This is an immersion chiller, the beer doesn't run through it, it just sits in the beer and takes away the heat from the beer!

You could use some star-san or other acidic substance (even vinegar) to remove the verdigris before using in your wort. Rinse well, of course.

My bad, same applies though just on the outside rather than the inside.

I read the title of the thread and was like, "This has to be a Sailor." I've never heard the word verdigris used in another context. Additionally, I can count on one hand the times I've seen it spelled correctly.

I don't think the verdigris would impart much flavor to the beer. I would scrub as much as I could off, but if it isn't dissolving easily in standard cleanser, how much would you expect to dissolve in ordinary wort?

Ha, yeah I think I got it all off...and speaking of it, I have it sitting out on my patio. Gotta go get it an clean it up!

Oh, the acidic wort will remove ALL of the verdigris off of the copper, and it'll come out shiny like new. Of course, the verdigris (which is poisonous) will come off in the wort. So if you clean it off first with an acid cleaner (not PBW, which is an alkali cleaner), you'll avoid the verdigris ending up in the wort.
