Tell me I'm not the only one that does this...

My better half says I'm "obsessed" and OCD about things I find interest in and could care less about what I don't lol.

Tell me I'm not the only one who when they walk by their Fermentors they stop and get a sniff of that magic happening.

It's kind of a home brewing necessity in my mindset. If I could grow a beard, I would in a heart beat. I would also have a hatchet on my person at all times as well lol.

No, but I'm not just sniffing; I'm listening for evidence. I've recorded the sound of the bubbles, up to 2 bloops per second.

I'm trying to figure out how to make it my ringtone. MP4 file. Tried to upload it here, can't figure out how.

Lol, mine would actually grow in all white trashy "Joe Dirt" style if I could let it. The Employer policy negates me from even trying unfortunately. I could try a mustache but I can't make it past 2 weeks before I force myself to shave haha!

Mongoose my friend, now THAT is awesome haha. At the very least a notification sound would be wicked!

Dang you Slym with that awesome beard! Haha I go as long as I can without shaving. Right up until like 5 minutes of signing on sometimes!

Cool idea! Maybe even stage a fermenter lid blow off (I recommend German Ale Yeast) and capture it on audio. Bloop, bloop, bloop, BANG!

Is it a size or format thing that isn't allowing the file to be uploaded here? Perhaps converting it to Mp3 would work or hosting the file on DropBox and dropping the link here.

I keep my little fermentor in an Igloo cooler and use frozen bottles of water to keep it cool, so I am constantly getting whiffs of my beer as it ferments every time I change the bottles.

    It's especially nice when I am dry-hopping!

It's an MP4 file; I recorded it using the voice recorder on my phone.

It probably has to be converted to some other format; I also need to find a way to increase the native volume of the recording.

The cooler I have can fit the LBK and two 2-liter bottles of ice. Doing that, I can get it down to 52-53° F ambient air temp. I usually use one 2-liter and one smaller bottle (I use quart vinegar plastic bottles) to keep it around 56 and that gets me 60-63° wort temperature during high krausen. After it drops, I can use just one smaller bottle to keep the ambient around 62 and the wort stays maybe one degree warmer than that. I like to keep the temp stable during the whole fermentation time, not "ramp up the temps" to "ensure complete attenuation". I personally believe that's BS. It may help speed up the process, but that's about it. If a yeast will ferment at 62, it will clean up & clear at that temp, too.

    :)

Apple uses .m4r extensions and Android uses .ogg, but .mp3, .m4a, or .wav will work too. Changing the extension is pretty straight forward.

And yes. I sniff my airlocks like quality beer depended on it.

    I also wear red flannels.

I prefer to play the riskier game of "stick your head in the bottom of the ferm chamber and see how long you can last until you pass out"

That definitely calls for a red flannel. And you do that to eat the trub.

I feel this is the place I can finally confess that I sometimes set up a webcam with remote access so I can keep an eye on my airlock while I am at work.

My colleague and my better half were both less understanding....

    I am a sniffer too.

    There. I said it.

Ive got a sour IPA in my ferm chamber now that I periodically open to check on and get a whiff of that dirty cheesy sock goodness. SWMBO is not happy when I do it. Apparently, the smell follows me down the hallway. Last night, I literally had to bring her over there to convince her I wasnt farting constantly. I guess airlocks are like your own flatulence - you dont mind the smell of your own

Bahahaha this thread has turned out hilarious! I'm truly glad I'm not the only one. My SO just stands there and thinks I'm ludicrous. She actually got mad at me the other day cause her wine hasn't started fermenting yet and took it as though I was bragging when mine was bubbling away and I was smelling the sweet aroma!

I sense a market opportunity here: scratch-and-sniff airlock aromas! That way you could not only see the activity, but have an odoriferous complement to the pictures!

They could come in different aromas, fruity, biscuity, sour--the whole spectrum of smells!

Imagine the Christmas stocking stuffer potential of this product!! :) :)

I just realized if I spread out my fermentors around areas where I usually hang out in my place, I never have to own up to a fart again

I always have to stop and smell. Sometimes I can tell as soon as I walk in the room. If only I could get the smell in an air freshener for my car rearview mirror.

No red flannel today, but I am wearing green flannel.

I listen too, Mongoose. I find it can be easier than watching for bubbles...especially the last few days of primary fermentation.

Reminds me of this book I saw two months back. It's a scratch and sniff for whiskey (there's one for wine too). Cool idea. I didn't see one for beer though.

Ive never been one for sniffing, but I do like peeking at the krausen. Only downside to my conicals, have to open up the lid to peek. I should put a window in.
