Just an FYI: the cap on this order will be 168 bags - for real this time :D It looks like we will reach our 152 bags. Or at least we are close enough to that amount to hold the order until we reach 152.

I am checking in with a few more people to see if there are any late comers on the order but was thinking if we hit the total this week we will officially close the order on Friday, or sooner if I hear back that there are no outstanding orders.

It's definitely worth a shot. Try it anywhere you'd typically use a pale malt. Guess the kernels tend to be a little more plump compared to MO as well. I was debating on picking up another sack of that or something else. But I think I'm at my limit =(

I'd recommend you guys do atleast a 50/50 split on it to try it.

Jeff - Does your spreadsheet take into account 50lb sacks?

It should. You can see which are 50lbs sacks when you look under the other tabs on the sheet (Locked pricing....)

Correct. The pricing sheets are all entered price per lb, and then total lbs per type. Same thing with the chemicals (rough guess on the star-san).

But here is a question.... do they consider flaked grains part of that 8000 or not? Also we have a 55lb bag of lactose and 50 lb of rice hulls in there too. A total of 6 bags of these types if my count is correct. My sheet includes these in the total grain weight calculations on the first page. Should it?

    Thank you sir!

    Jeff,

The lactose won't count, and the rice hulls I am not sure. Originally I thought the flaked wheat/ barley would count, but now I am not so sure because they don't have a pricing structure that is affected by the lb like other grains do. If we err on the side of caution how bad does that hurt us?

i.e. how many bags would we need if we don't count the flaked products/ lactose and rice hulls towards the order grain weight?

I could probably call them and check.

I would take the following approach. If I were speaking with CMG, I would say "It DOES COUNT". Would CMG *really* give up a $5500+ order over a $.01/# price break (about $79 as I type), especially if the order is close? Also remember that we are now a good repeat customer whose order quantities have been going up over time.

    SHOOT!
"All malt products are available in either whole kernel or milled form. Please allow an additional 1‐3 days for milling.
Prices are discounted according to the total malt ordered on a single order. These price breaks are as follows:
    < 2,000 lbs.
    2 ‐ 4,000 lbs.
    8,000 lbs.
    12,000 lbs.
    32,000 lbs.
    Please call for bulk pricing."

Only malt products. Flaked wheat, rice hulls won't count (since they are raw, unmalted products).

I am still on the edge over one more sack. I'm struggling with what to get assuming that I will have enough grains for quite a while. Hopefully when we reach 152 we can do a 24 hour (or whatever) "last call". There might be a few folks out there still trying to decide whether to have "one more". :)

I'll remove those products from the weight tally for the 8000 mark then right now.

I've never ordered in group buy, but of you only need 4 more 50lbs bags to I'll the order, I'm in. I didn't see grain options or prices... If someone wants to fill me in on how this works that would be great.

Basically the information is in the first few posts. If you put you name on the order sheet (post#2) then you will be able to add grain bags real time. They will add a cost to your name at the top column. Expect the prices there to be a few bucks on the high side (your end price should be less than what has been reported on the sheet). General pricing is about 35$ including shipping for CM-2ROW and maybe $45 for Marris Otter or similar. Specialty malts are usually done in fractions or splits. If you want to put a split up (.25 or .33, etc of a bag you can do so by listing the item under the split section on the order form.)

Do you need grain brand recommendations?

Post # 1 has the link so you can view the catalog.

Next buy will be in about 4 months, so stock up now :D

    Good to have you along

Total malt weight calculation updated on the front page (Cell 4B). Removed the lactose, rice hulls, and the 4 bags of flaked XXXX from this estimate. So from my calculations, we need 9 more bags to hit the 8000# mark. So we need to exceed 158 now.

    New Target 158

    1. Where do you live....just making sure you are aware that you will have to pick up the grain at the designated place (Syracuse).

    2. Some grains come in 55# sacks, some in 50#. Not a big deal, but just making you aware. The most popular is the CM-2ROW (Canadian Malting) as it is cheapest and works well. (Comes in a 55# sack.)

I also went in for 1/3 sack, and am also willing to go up to 1/2 if no-one else takes the other third. The only thing I am worried about (a bit) is the fact that it is harder to transport partial sacks vs full sacks (in my car) due to needing a bucket (assuming I don't get the last 1/3 or whatever), and the amount of space needed. (I'm up to 10 splits plus the sacks.)

Edit: Just noticed (looking at the spreadsheet) that we are almost at a full pallet of 2row (35 CM + 4 GW). WOW.

For those who store grain or hops via a vac sealer, I picked up some bags online last week in anticipation of this grain buy. Found these bags called quart plus sized bags. They are the width of normal quart vac sealer bags, but double the length. I filled this one up to 6lbs of Munich tonight to see how much I could fit. You prob could fit 7lbs in one if you really tried.

Here is where you can order them. 50 for ~$17. I plan on vac'ing up most of my splits to keep em fresh for awhile. http://www.thesweetattack.com/page/page/2380629.htm

hoptopia - there are some people from buffalo area in the buy. Likely with a few messages when the buy closes you guys can coordinate a mutually beneficial pick up coordination.

Willing to up-size. I have 1/2 of a sack of golden promise (split #8). I am willing to go to a full sack if there is someone out there that is willing to take over the 1/2 sack. ;)

Very cool - I would be all over that copyright, if I hadn't grabbed my full bag already!

Keep the push on gents - would be great to close soon so I can get the full order to our buyer before the weekend.

bierhaus - awesome and thanks for rounding up the troops in utica. I know it can be like herding cats, but it is appreciated!

    5 sacks to go!

It looks like a couple payments you guys made to amazon made it into last month's statement. i.e. if there are a couple people out there who still want to pay by amazon I have $673.55 of space left to accept electronic payments

Keep in mind that when the order closes you will have to send a certified check or money order if you haven't paid and we can't deal with the difference in paypal.

Lastly. It is imperative that you pay ASAP once we close the order. Since we are receiving the grain at a business we need to make every effort to clear the grain from the business by the close of the first weekend after we receive the grain. You can't pick up your grain until I have your money. Personal checks takes days to clear and this will obstruct your ability to make a timely pick up. I don't want to be dealing with cash at pick up.

    Thanks!

Cidah - if available, I'm still planning on paying via Amazon - I'm just waiting until Friday (2/10) if I can to kick it onto next month's statement. Let me know if this will be a problem however.

I'll send my payment today through Amazon instead of snail mail. Would it be better to send what the spreadsheet says I owe or the deposit amount you posted earlier?

Do you have an idea what weekend will be the pick up will be? My work schedule is ever changing and I need to make sure I have a some time off.

Cidah - I plan to mail my final payment same day with a MO as soon as I have a final tally. However, since I have a substantial order if you want me to send the difference now, I can certainly do that. Let me know.

Westo - no problem - just trying to get people in the mind frame of payment, and how crucial it is they do the payment quickly (if you send a payment last minute just please do so in the form of a money order or certified check; that will count as an instant payment when I have it in hand). Amazon is fine as long as someone else doesn't get to it ahead of you :) I can only take $1000 a month, then they charge me fees. i.e. you will have to pay the fees they charge.

Smashing - I would say pay the full amount posted if possible. This way if you are a little over or under we can settle up via paypal.

jbsengineer - no worries, you paid down a deposit so that helps. Feel free to wait until the last minute, just try to pay with a money order or cert check.

As for pickup this is absolutely dependent on when we close the order. Once I get the order I will still have to submit to the buyer who in turn submits to NCM (figure from 24hrs to several days). We get pricing back and I provide the actual cost to each person. Once we submit the order they pick and ship. That usually means the order goes out within 1-2 days of our order request.

The key here is, since we are delivering to a business that is kind enough to let us do so we need to execute the payment/pickup ASAP.

If we don't close the order this week we will hold the order until we do. Since we only have 5 bags it is crazy not to close out to 8000lbs for the grain. I know Utica club is likely spoken for and I am not sure if there are any other order coming in from new people, maybe 1 person. i.e. get the lead out and place another bag on the order if you have one left in you :D
