I just bottled my first ale. I boiled 1 liter of water with 5 oz of priming sugar, cooled to room temp and placed at bottom of bottling bucket and racked on top of it.

I now realized I didn't stir after racking. I was wondering if anyone has done this and if it led to any problems. If you rack onto sugar water, do you need to stir?

I never stir. I just put it in and let the natural motion of the beer falling on top of the priming sugar mix it up....I've never had an issue with not stirring it.

I think a lot of new brewers who open their beer too soon blame their inconsistant carbing on not mixing their sugar, but I think that's not the case at all. I believe it mixes fine on it's own through the whole process of racking and filling bottles.

Just keep your bottles in a 70 degree or above space and give it a minimum of three weeks, put a couple bottles in the fridge for a day or 2 (grab them from seperate bottle boxes or wherever you are storing them-just not too near each other) and see if they are carbed, if they're not grab a couple more in another week or so.

A liter of water? Wow thats way too much a cup or two will do.

Thanks guys! Beer was in fermenter for 3 weeks. Gravity was good. I was concerned that some would be overly sugared, explode, and piss my wife off! Whoop, there goes my hobby :)

That's good to know. I got that advice from my LHBS. I will try that next time.
