I salvaged 6 20# CO2 tanks from a construction site that they were throwing out. However, the tanks say property of another company all over them. Do you think I would be able to bring the tanks to a gas supplier and have them filled? Some are aluminum and some are steel. I could always go back to the original company, but I'm not sure they wouldn't take them from me

Unless the info is stamped into the tanks you should be able to remove it. Use solvents to break down glue or sand off paint (or use a wire brush on a drill/grinder).

If you don't need/want any of the aluminum tanks, let me know. I'll gladly remove the markings from them. :D

The guys at the filling stations usually don't even ask about it. I mean, they are just filling them. If you have a place that only does exchanges, you may have a problem.

what you might find is that they need to be tested again. What are the dates stamped on them?

I'll have to check. I think the aluminum ones last longer than the steel ones though right?

Most of the air/gas places around here don't fill your bottles as it takes to long to do and they want to do them in batches. As long as the bottles don't belong to a competitor (ie another gas shop) they'll take 'em, clean off old stickers, and give you another set of bottles. The bottles that are owned by gas companies are on some sort of lease program, that why they honor each other's ownership.

That really depends. My recent visit at my welding supply place, I gave her a small 5# tank. The girl went to the back to do a swap, and it took her a bit longer than I anticipated, more like 4-5 minutes instead of 1-2 minutes. She came back with gloves on and a bunch of carbonic ice gassing away. She had quickly refilled it.

That's how my experience is....I drop the tank in the back, pay up front, walk back and pick up the now cold and full tank. Takes 5 min
