Ribena wine??

    Heard a bit about this. New to home brewing. Just got the typical plastic barrels etc etc. But has anyone got a recipe and guide for doing a good one. A proven one?they already done.

    I be found a couple online but thought I'd ask here as the ones I found aren't very in depth.

    Bearing in mind im new at this please can people explain in simple terms what I need etc ha ha.

    I have had a search on the forum and not managed to find anything.

    Does Ribena have sorbate in it? We usually use it in ports to top up after the first racking to add some cassis tastes. I think it has preservatives in it, I have seen people boil it to deactivate sorbate? WVMJ

    I'm not sure. I've seen when looking around people boil it first so that the yeast can work. If not boiled I think the preservatives stop it fermenting.

    Going to start this this weekend I hope. But I've never brewed adding my own ingredients. So how many tea spoons of yeast and yeast nutrients would people recommend for 5 gallons worth of drink? I was thinking 5 tsp if each. Tsp per gallon? Our should I use less yeast?

    Check the label for preservatives. Some Ribena products have them & some don't. Use the stuff that doesn't have preservatives, it's the sorbate & benzoate that you need to avoid. Also, black currants are very high in acid (ascorbic acid/vitamin C), so this will be quite tart when the sugar has been fermented out. You'll likely need to dilute and/or backsweeten, how much is a matter of personal taste. I've never used Ribena, though I've used black currant juice & I can tell you a little goes a long way; but again, it's a matter of personal taste.

    As to your questions on yeast, dry wine yeast is usually sold in 5g sachets, which are good for 1 gallon to 5 gallons; I routinely use them in 6 gallon batches with no problems. As for yeast nutrient, follow the directions on the pkg. As the dosage can vary from brand to brand.

    Looza also makes good black currant juice, no preservatives, we switched to this when we want to add a cassis taste to a port at the start, saving the Ribena if we want to add it at the end. WVMJ
