Regulator Position?

    I am a total newb to kegging. I want to put my co2 tank on the hump of my chest freezer, but with the regulator attached the lid does not close. Can I have the gauges parallel to the floor? I know you can do a collar build, but I do not want too much beer stuff going on. Need to keep the wife happy :)
