Racking to soon?

    Hey everyone. I have a question about racking to secondary. I started a wheat sunday. Its been going constantly at about 73 degrees. The bubbles in the airlock have already slowed to about once every 10 to 15 seconds. i want to rack it over onto some orange and vanilla bean.
    Should i rack now since the activity has slowed that much, or should i wait another day? I dont wanna risk it oxidizing if i wait too long. thoughts?

    Check the gravity. If you are at or near the Fg than go ahead and rack. The beer will not oxidize in such a short period of time if you let it sit for another few days to a week.

    It's under airlock, so try to rack it in less that 8 weeks. You want to wait till most of the yeast drops. Don't rush it, most beers I make stay in the fermenter for 2-4 weeks then finish their time in the keg. oxidizing can happen happen when you rack, so don't do that.

    Thanks for the replies everyone. My main concern is racking to the secondary on top of my orange peel. Im scared the head space wont fill woth co2 if i wait too long. Its still steady so i will wait to see how much it slows down
    Also i dont know what the final gravity should be. I wrote the recipe and its my first time brewing it. I know there is a way to try to predict the fg.. how is that done?

    I wouldn't worry too much about the CO2. Racking is going to release quite a bit of dissolved CO2 and I'm sure after racking you'll see the airlock pick up for a bit.

    And a rough estimate to predict the FG is take your OG and divide by 4. So if you started at 1.050, the predicted FG should be around 1.012.

    Any reason you don't want to just add the orange and vanilla directly to the primary fermenter? Are you planning on harvesting the yeast or aging on the beans for a long period of time? If you only were planning on secondary for a couple of weeks I would just say throw the vanilla and orange directly into primary and don't bother with a secondary at all.

    Actually im moving it to secondary because my primary is also my bottling bucket... I should probably invest in a second one for my next batch
