Racking cane siphoning

    The racking cane/auto siphon has that removable tip at the bottom. At the bottom of the inside of the carboy, the glass is "humped."
    Can I remove that little cap from the bottom of the racking cane, then place the racking cane so it rests on that hump in the carboy to siphon?
    I figure that now the racking cane will be resting rock bottom while any sediment will be left around the outside edges below the hump.
    In other words, can this be a good idea to get the beer out without any sediment?

    No, you'll still draw sediment out if you place it too deep into the sediment.

    Here's a tip or two: A day or so prior to racking place a wedge under one side of the container. The yeast/sediment will slide to the deep end of the pool so to speak.

    I also place a spring clamp on my autosyphon tube so the tube doesn't touch bottom. When the beer has transferred then I remove the clamp and lower the tube some and restart the syphon. Taking only what I want from the bottom.

    Remember: the cleaner your transfer the cleaner your final brew.:D ;)

    But if there is that hump at the bottom wouldn't any sediment be below it's highest point?
    I think that hump in the glass rises above the sediment which would then be settled in the crevice around the edges. I'm talking about a secondary so not so much sediment.

    In theory that will work, Brewno, but usually there's too much sediment for the curve of the glass to rise up through so there is still some your siphon would suck through. I find it easier to wedge the edge up a bit, then as the wort gets close to the bottom, VERY gently lower the side down so you get that last little bit before the sediment invades it.

    I also place a very fine mesh (folded into two layers) acting as a filter in between the cane and the plastic tip cap.
