QD Question

Didn't want to hijack the other QD post.

Is there a method to the placement of the male and female parts of the QD or is it personal preference? More specifically, do you put the male on the hose and the female one the fixture or dose it matter?

 

Straight off the Bargain Fittings website..

Commom camlock setups.

Typical setup with Males on things like pumps/valves and females on hoses.

Hoses - Female camlock Style C on each end

Female camlock Style D + 1/2" NPT 90 elbow + 1/2 NPT x 1/2" hose barb fitting

Female camlock Style B + 1/2" NPT street elbow and streach the hose over the threads (some grind the threads off to make the hose easier to get on)


Pumps - Male camlock with 1/2" NPT thread (Style A or Style F)

Valves - Male camlock with 1/2" NPT thread - Style F

 

I think it's a matter of preference mostly but I will say that the female has the operable mechanism and if it's fixed to your kettles, they'll heat up a lot more. Assuming you're talking about camlocks, the arms do need room to swing. You may have a specific port on a plate chiller or whatever where a female just wouldn't have room to operate. Lastly, count up all the ports that will require connection. In my setup, with females on the hoses, I ended up needing more males than females and males are cheaper.

With the McMaster QD's, placing the female on the hose allows you to one hand connect and disconnect.

do the McMaster QDs work like air hose fittings? i.e. when you unhook them will the female fitting prevent flow?

 

You can get them that way - but - they severely restrict fluid flow.

I also think it's a good idea to put the female connectors on the hoses. In general all female qd's have nooks and cranny's meaning more places that needs to be cleaned out. It's easier to soak hoses which make them easier to clean.
