I currently have one plant in a large pot about 30 gallons. i cut the plant back during my move to the in law's but it grew a good bit. looks like its stopped now. once i cut it back down to the soil and cover it up. am i good to go? or should i bring it into the garage?

also could i use 1-2 inches of soil instead of mulch?

Not sure if you're still looking for a reply but I have left a few potted hops outside this year and so far they aren't doing anything. We have had warm days here and there too but so far so good. I have always kept them in the shed until after last frost just to keep from growing but I'm going to plant them in the ground this year (4th year) so I decided to leave them out. I have read the soil will warm quicker in a pot rather than the ground so bull shoots might start to pop sooner than plants in the ground.

That's funny I was just thinking of this about an hour or two ago. I was talking to my daughter asking her if the hops would grow this year. She is 3 so I have to keep it simple.

I wouldn't be surprised if some shoots started to pop in a couple of months. They're pretty hardy plants!
I have a 3 and a 5 year old that love to watch the hops climb up the twine. Have fun and teach em young!
