Potential fermentation chamber

    well OK, it will become a fermentation chamber somehow... i'm curious to get some opinions from those of you who've done them or have know-how in refrigeration. the pics below are of the same unit in white, i got a black one for really cheap from a college kid here on craigslist, still works great. the only trepidation i have is from the separate freezer compartment... there's no separate control for it and i'm wondering if it will continue to try and freeze since i plan to remove the doors and build an extension on it.

    anyway, ideas, thoughts on how this will work would be appreciated.

    Yes, it will 'try' to freeze, but with a temp controller and a fan to stir the air around your chamber, should work fine...

    Hey-

    This is kind of OT, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere.

    Would it be possible to cut out (even partially) the separation between the freezer and the fridge? I have seen people do this with a side by side, but not with one like this. For cold crashing/lagering purposes.

    I imagine the coolant lines are all around the freezer box- in which case, no, but I can't find any schematics online about these fridges.

    This would be in lieu of getting an upright freezer.

    i've definitely considered it, but i'm also worried about the cooling lines. i'm almost 100% sure they run all around the freezer compartment, which gets pretty damn cold. i was hoping to minimize the size of the extension i put on it, but i think i'll just provide room for 2 fermenters, i'll be using it mostly for fermenting lagers in and lagering them. and probably a few ales in the summer when my basement gets too warm. i don't want to make it too big and lose the good cooling ability of it. i think i'll put a muffin fan on the top and on the bottom to maxmize the cooling ability from the freezer compartment.
