I have 8 ounces of galaxy hops and I'm wanting to make a big IPA with them. I have never used them or tasted them before. Here is the recipe I have so far:

    Mash Ingredients
    Amt Name Type # %/IBU
    10 lbs Pale Ale (Dingemans) (3.3 SRM) Grain 1 76.9 %
    2 lbs Vienna Malt (Briess) (3.5 SRM) Grain 2 15.4 %
    8.0 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 3 3.8 %
    8.0 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 80L (80.0 SRM) Grain 4 3.8 %

    Mash Steps
Name Description Step Temperature Step Time
    Mash In Add 24.00 qt of water at 162.7 F 152.0 F 60 min
Batch sparge with 2 steps (Drain mash tun, , 2.79gal) of 200.0 F water
    First Wort Hops
    Amt Name Type # %/IBU
    0.75 oz Centennial [10.00 %] - First Wort 60.0 min Hop 5 26.0 IBUs

    Boil Wort
Add water to achieve boil volume of 7.08 gal
Estimated pre-boil gravity is 1.053 SG

    Boil Ingredients
    Amt Name Type # %/IBU
    1.00 oz Galaxy [12.40 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 6 14.1 IBUs
    1.50 oz Galaxy [12.40 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 7 11.7 IBUs
    1.50 oz Galaxy [12.40 %] - Boil 0.0 min Hop 8 0.0 IBUs

Estimated Post Boil Vol: 6.08 gal and Est Post Boil Gravity: 1.064 SG

According to beersmith its at 52ibus.

I am open to any and all suggestions. On one hand I wanted to keep all galaxy but then started wondering if I should blend something with it. I have plenty of: nelson sauvin, amarillo, simcoe, cascade, citra, centennial, columbus.

I would love to hear some feedback on this one. Who has experience with galaxy? What can I expect? Is it overkill with just this one hop variety? I also was thinking about bittering with something other than centennial, thats just what I have on hand.

    CHeers and Thanks!!!

I just had a galaxy smash at cigar city. Delicious, similar to citra. I personally think it's best suited to beers with more than one flavoring hip but it's def worth it to try out galaxy on its own.

    Galaxy/citra sounds amazing

Most people have described Galaxy as a passionfruit/tropical hop. I think bo above me is right, Citra+Galaxy would be ridiculously good.

I love citra so that may be an option. Think I'm going to use some warrior for bittering as well.

Just a question. Why do you use two similar crystal malts? I make a very similar all centennial hopped IPA recipe with 8 oz. 40L and then 8 oz of carapils. It turns out very good for my taste.

I was strongly considering this idea. I have never used Nelson either.

Lately by far my favorite combo is nelson, galaxy and a bit of simcoe. The aroma I have gotten with that combo is unreal.

I'm going to rework the hops tonight for sure. Going to shoot for a nelson/galaxy mix with a bit of simcoe for flame out and dry hop.

thanks for sharing, just bought the ingredients for this to brew tomorrow. The LHBS didn't have Simcoe so I swapped out for Northern B. Also took out the flamout hops as I don't want it to be overly aromatic
