    Brew the brew!

    Posted Aug 2, 2012
My new false bottom will be getting here on Friday and I plan to brew on Saturday. It's a 12" domed false bottom that will be going into a 10 gallon Gott cooler that is approximately 13" across at the bottom. Do I just need to stick it in there or do I need to somehow attach it to the bottom? My initial thought is that the weight of the grain and water will hold it down, but you can never be too careful when using new equipment. Thanks for your advice.

Are you using some silicone (or vinyl) tubing to connect the nipple on the FB to the ballvalve? If so, just make sure it's on there nice and tight. What really, really, really sucks is when you hit that with your mash paddle and dislodge it. I found that by having the tubing a wee bit too long (so that it's a bit of a pain to put on), it doesn't come off if you accidentally give it a few big whacks. You want to stir the mash extremely well, but you don't want to dislodge the tubing.

I was just planning on using a hose clamp to keep it on there, so no worries there. I can imagine how much that would suck to have that come off mid-mash. Thanks for the advice and quick response.

If you have it connected to the ball valve with some tubing, the FB won't "float" on you and the 12" FB works very well in the round Gott cooler so don't worry about that!

I've had the same 12" FB for about 7 years now, and am still loving it!

Awesome! Thanks for the reassurance. We'll see how this goes on Saturday. With the reduced dead space, I am excited to see how the FB will affect my efficiency.

Not to hijack or anything but I used my new false bottom on a hefe and I got stuck sparges 2 times, blew on the tube a couple of times and got it coming out, remember to vorlauf! The stuck sparges I blame on the flour from the wheat. While I'm on the subject I just bought some rice hulls, how much do I add per mash and do I add it on top of the false bottom before adding the grains? Thanks!!

I just toss a handfull in the mash. I'll measure everything else but rice hulls....Nahhh I do rinse them first thought. Have you ever see the dirt that comes off them? YUCK!

Mix it in with the rest of the grain. If the rice hulls are on the bottom, the grain bed can still compact on top and stick. Mixed in it creates the filtering effect you're looking for.
