Curious is anyone could set me straight on recipe modification in relation to MT Deadspace. I recently went from a converted 10G cooler mash tun to a 15G pot with false bottom. It was part of a larger upgrade to go from 5 to 10 gal batches and new RIMS setup. The pot/false bottom has a significantly larger deadspace (approx 1.8 Gallon w/ no dip tube). I have change the deadspace in Beersmith under the volumes tab to the new 1.8gal number on some old recipes and the only thing I notice it adjusts is the amount of initial mash water you need to compensate. Shouldn't there be an adjustment on the amount of grain as well to make up for the added water to keep the OG the same?

    Thanks!

No. If you leave the brewhouse efficiency unchanged in beersmith there will be no adjustment to the recipe.

Brewhouse efficiency may well change as a result of the new equipment, but unless you tell Beersmith that the brewhouse eff is changed it won't result in any recipe changes.

How you reach the endpoint in efficiency does not matter. Knowing the number does.

With an increased dead-space mash efficiency will likely be lowered as you are losing sugars to the dead space. There may well be a reduction in BH as a result. That's for you to determine.

Thanks Gavin! That makes perfect sense. Guess software can't guess my efficiency can it :smack:

I'm going to try to decrease my total efficiency a couple percent and re adjust the grain bill and see how that fairs on my next batch.

    Thanks again!
