Looking for a place to fish, camp, and drink in WI

OK, Cheeseheads, I need some help.

Where are some good private campgrounds in Southern Wisconsin that allow tent camping and drinking and are near good fishing areas?

I personally don't know much about private campgrounds, I usually go to state parks

 

It's going to take me an hour to clean the soda out of my keyboard here at work . . .:rockin:

 

State parks are usually your best bet. They tend to either have lakes or are near other lakes. They are inexpensive and usually offer really nice campsites. I'm going to one this weekend. I will eat and drink, but not fish. Hopefully it will not rain the entire weekend.

 

Fishing....hell yeah. I'm gonna rig my fly pole and tackle a few Grayling. If I can fit that keg in the trailer, it's going with me.

 

Might be a little further than you want to go but Baraboo area (south of the dells) is a really pretty area. I'd recommend mirror lake state park. SE WI is more like camping in corn fields. Unless you head about an hour north of Milwaukee into Northern Kettle Moraine state park. Oh yea, west Kettle moraine would be a closer choice too. I don't remember all the lakes though. Go to Baraboo in my opinion though.

Edit - baraboo is 3 hrs from you. The kettle moraine state parks (N & W) if you don't want to drive that far.

Growing up as a kid we did a lot of camping on the Mississippi. A couple nice campgrounds that I can think of are Big River Campground I really like this area of Wisconsin as there's so much to do in this area. You've got the great fishing on the Mississippi right there, Pikes Peak, Effigy Mounds and lots lots more! Would also recommend Blackhawk Park which is about 30 miles South of La Crosse on the Mississippi. Not as much close to you in that area so you'd be more confined to the campground without a 30 mile drive somewhere. Good luck!

 

The fishing part is where you are kinda throwing me off. I did a bunch of seearching last night but the problem is what kind of fishing are you looking for. River or Lake? Boat or shore?

Oh yeah and dont over look the State Parks . . . if you are even able to get into them (they book up fast)

Right off of I-43 there is a small town I grew up near called Mukwonago(well it was small when I was a kid) that has a decent campground. It's also close to Phantom Lake and the Fox River

BTW below link is one of my favorites and should cover you no matter what type of fishing you are looking for. You can rent a bow boat for a decent price and a VERY nice campground just north of Milwaukee
Kinda strict but not assholes. Quiet but friendly. VERY clean. The first campground where I didnt feel dirty after using the showers

I'll have to echo the state park bit, althought it can be tough to get a last minute slot anywhere worth a crap.

If you can give up fishing you can camp in my backyard. Lots of rabbits (and you cna kill all you'd like). And there's beer.

 

Most state parks are VERY against alcohol. I stayed at Bong State Park and was actually woken up in the middle of the night to see if I was drinking. Rangers shined a flashlight in my tent and asked me to wake up, then asked if I was drinking. There were some people down the road having some beers and listening to music and they were asked to pack up and leave on the spot, until one was smart enough to say "You're forcing us to drive drunk". They were woken up EARLY the next morning and escorted out.

I never knew anyone actually went in Bong State Park. I always thought everyone took a pic near the sign and drove off.

With a few exceptions, people of legal drinking age may bring alcoholic beverages along for their picnic or campsite meals in Wisconsin state parks and forests.
The exceptions are:

• No one except registered campers in their family campsites may have open containers of or drink alcoholic beverages between March 31 and the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend in any of these places:
  • State parks
  • Kettle Moraine and Point Beach state forests
  • Posted DNR water access sites
• Alcoholic beverages are prohibited year round in these places:
  • At Big Foot Beach State Park
  • At Heritage Hill State Park
  • On observation towers
• Alcoholic beverages are prohibited at the McMiller Sports Center in Kettle Moraine State Forest--Southern Unit when the range is open to shooters.

Park visitors must be considerate of others and the environment, not noisy, disruptive or destructive in any way.

Could've been the park you were at; can't imagine parkies being a bit aggressive in a park called BONG. Either that or it was your license plate .

 

Yeah thats pretty Bong specific. They have HUGE problems down there with unauthorized camping and under age drinking

 

WHAAA????? That's NEVER happened to me, and I've been camping WI State parks all my life. and usually in a state of intoxication. I will, say, however, that I've never been to Bong recreatiion are. You must have gotten some kind of Nazis for rangers.

if you do stay at a state park check and see if you need a permit to drink because you are from out of state. i know its crazy but one of my friends brother was camping in wisconsin and the police gave him some trouble because he didn't buy a $10 or something like that permit to allow him to drink. just something to look into, its stupid but how many laws aren't.

 

That's bull****. IF some cop sold him a 'drinking permit' it was a scam.
