Keezer seals

I folks. I'm going to be building my keezer soon. Have all the gear on its way and a freezer in the garage. I'm attaching the lid to the collar with hinges. Quick question. My freezer is white and I plan to paint it black. But what about the seal between the lid and the body? My model (frigidaire ffc0923dw) doesn't come in black so I can't order a factory black seal. Is there another type of seal that will work well?

 

I used some black closed-cell foam weatherstripping as the seal between my lid and collar. Seems to work well. Go to your local hardware store and see what they have.

 

Why not just build a collar that will cover the seal area? That way it doesn't matter what color the seal is.

 

Any seal is good. I used this one, it may be ugly but it worked.

The thought crossed my mind. I would just need to add some kind of handle to pull it up.

 

Do you know if there is a heating and air supply house in your area? Airco is one near me and I can get almost any seal for a fridge or freezer in black. It maybe A little different but will work and they are all food grade

 

Are you planning on having your freezer seal coming in contact with the beer and then drinking it afterwards? If not, then there's really no reason to worry about "food-grade" in this application.

 

No not at all. I'm just concerned about being energy efficient and figured that the factory seal would be best. I like the idea of building the collar so that it covers the seal. That would solve the problem without making any modifications to the lid.

 

Cold air sinks, so the keezer is going to be pretty energy efficient even if you do have a crappy seal. Just be sure to keep the drain plug covered. I didn't have a drain plug on the used one I bought and it took me a while to figure out that my keezer was kicking on a lot more than it should have been because of the missing drain plug.
