I'm at the store getting my supplies and my recipe calls for rice hulls but the only have flaked rice. Is this the same or should I try to find the right thing somewhere else? Or will something else work?

No! They are not even close to the same thing. Rice hulls are a filler to help avoid stuck mashes and sparges. Flaked rice is a fermentable.

I use 1/2-1lb of rice hulls in most beers I brew. 5-5.5 gal batch. With my system I've found it really evens the temperature out in the grain bed of my tun.

+1 what Yooper said. Hulls are similar to the husk on barley. Typically you'd use them when using a significant amount of huskless grain (e.g. malted wheat, malted rye, etc) in the mash. They're mixed in with the grain and allow liquid to flow through the grain bed. If you're not using a significant amount of huskless grain, you can probably skip the hulls...but flaked rice would definitely not have the same effect as hulls.

Glad you asked, that could have been a catastrophe.
