This is a poem by Edgar Allen Poe:

    The Glory of Intoxication

    Alcohol und Nikotine
    Rafft die Halbe Menschheit hin
    Ohne Alkohol und Rauch
    Stirbt die andere Hälfte auch

Der grösste Feind der Menschheit wohl
Das ist und bleibt der Alcohol
Doch in der Bibel steht geschrieben
Du sollst auch deine Feinde lieben

If its good for ancient Druids
    Running nekkid through the wuids
    Drinking strange fermented fluids
Then its good enough for me!

Fill with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again
    Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain
    Quaintest thoughts - queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away
What care I how time advances
    I am drinking ale today

I didn't know Edgar Allen Poe spoke German.

I agree about the alcohol but not so much the smoking. I don't have anything against it, but I never really felt like humanity couldn't live without it.

Poe belonged to another age. I wasn't there, but I can imagine that sentiment was different then in some regards.

"What care I how time advances
    I am drinking ale today"

...and these words are inscribed on a brass plaque attached to my brew ladder.

Truly? That's cool. Very fitting quote.

I can't take full credit for it. I built the brew ladder based off an online design by Steve Krantz and he sent me the plaque to make it official:
