    Hello!

I made an American Pale Ale using Magnum, Chinook and Citra. I have a pound of Cascade whole cone hops. How would using Cascade in dry hop affect the final result? Would these hops do well together? Or could would it mask the flavors of the hops in the boil?

    30 Gallon Batch

    2 oz Magnum @ 60
    2 oz Chinook @ 30
    2 oz Citra @ 15
    2 oz Citra @ 5

It would make it taste awesome! Cascade goes great with Chinook and Citra.

The Magnum and the chinook wont add much nose to the beer due to when they're being added.

Citra and cascade would go well together. You can put a few of each hops into a cup, shake it around, and then smell it to get an idea of what it would do.

*Corrected* 1oz of cone hops is approx = 1oz of pellets .
based on that I might be inclined to use somewhere between 3-6 oz, dry-hopped for 7 days (after primary is finished)

The conventional wisdom is pellets provide 10% more bang for the pound than whole leaf...

    Cheers!

Swap them 1 for 1. DT is right that pellets give up more oils due to being pulverized in the processing, and it is generally accepted as being 10%. You are not going to notice 10% difference.

6 to 12 ozs of leaf as a dry hop. I hope you are ready to give up half a gallon of your beer, as that is roughly how much you will lose when going with the upper end of your weight.

Leaf hops are roughly 20% of the original wet weight, so if you add 12 ozs of leaf hops, when you remove them, you are pulling out 60 ozs of 'rehydrated' hops (or 4 pints).

To bag or not to bag? If you don't bag, many of the hops will not get wet as they will all be layered on the top of the beer. If you bag, you need a big bag as they will expand. You will also need weights (sanitized shot glasses, marbles, etc) to hold the bag under the beer.

You can squeeze a bag to get some of the beer back. You can't squeeze free hops.
