How much slurry to use?

    I just racked a Wee Heavy to secondary and saved nearly all of the trub - about 2 quarts split. This was a double pitch of danstar Nottingham. I'm planning to brew a brown ale in the next couple days. How much of the slurry should I pitch? I was thinking half, but might this be an over pitch?

    Around a cup, if it's a fairly standard brown ale (~1.050 ish). Or you can consult one of the starter calculators that supports slurry volumes, like Mr. Malty, to get more exact numbers.

    I'm not an exact numbers guy so "around a cup" is helpful and about what I was thinking. I might look at the calculator for ***s and giggles.

    This is one of those questions where you get lots of opinion based answers. When I do a 5.5G batch I get about 1/2G slurry like you said. I'll divide that up into 2 one quart Mason jars, loosely lidded and refrigerated. When it settles in the fridge, you should have at least 1/3 jar of yeast cake. Personally, I decant most of the beer off the top, warm to pitching temps, swirl and use the whole yeast cake from one of the jars. Others may gulp and quote yeast calculators and the like, but I haven't had a failure to launch yet. Conversely, I don't let the yeast sit months on end, rather I like to use it within 6-8 weeks with this method.

    I haven't looked at a calculator since using my first slurry,This is what I pitch everybrew with great results.These started as a full jar of slurry before settling.

    I think that's what I needed, some confirmation that it will launch. I have a couple of jars in the fridge from a previous brew like johnnyrotten's but I thought I would go with the wee heavy sludge instead.

    Since you have such a small amount of beer on top of the yeast, I wouldn't even worry about decanting that off the top. Swirl, pitch and blast off! :rockin:

    Jonny what kind of beer was that slurry from second from the left? Looked like it had hibiscus infusion...pretty and red. Nice.

    I usually pitch around 4-6 ounces and it blasts off. Expect mega krausen to happen quickly!

    No problem. It's on the counter now getting up to temp.

    I expect some krausen. The wee heavy blew over within 12 hours and warped the air lock cap.
