My Bavarian Hefeweizen is ready to bottle today. I am not sure if different recipes call for different amounts of sugar, but I know my most recent Triple Hoped Ale required 3.0oz. Here is my recipe and I would like to know how much sugar yall think I should use. Thanks

    Bavarian Hefeweizen:

    Breiss Bavarian Wheat DME 6.0lbs
German Hallertau whole hops (AAU 4.1%) - 1oz added at 60 minutes
    Wyeast #3333 German Wheat Yeast

Allowed to ferment for three weeks. OG is 1.060 and FG today was reading 1.012. There is a total yield of 5 gallons and I will bottling into 12oz bottles. Of course I will be using my priming tank and boiling the sugar in 2-3 cups of water before hand. Thanks.

4oz of corn sugar is will get you average carbonation in a 5 gallon batch. 5oz will be appropriate for a more highly carbonated style.

Agreed. Look at how much beer you have, and you may have less than 5 gallons (guesstimating is fine!). If you have, say, 4.75 gallons, I'd use 4.75 ounces of corn sugar (by weight).

1 oz per finished gallon is a good carb level for many beers, and it'd be great for your beer.

Thank you very much fellas...I think after taking 3 gravity readings over the course of 3 weeks, I am sitting at 4.75 gallons give or take a small amount. I will take your advice and use 4.5-4.75oz of sugar. I like carbonation, but not over carbonated so I think sticking to the lower end will make a great beer. Thanks guys.

I HATE those calculators. They have you carb "to style", but sometimes they are just crazy. Most people who buy bottled beers don't get flat beer (like they'd have you prime for a bitter) or bottle bombs (like they'd have you prime for a weizen).

People who buy commercial beer bottles are accustomed to a standard level of carb, about 2.2-2.5 volumes of co2.

Don't use 7 ounces! 4.5-5 ounces is fine.

Cool thank you very much...I was think that didn't seem right at all. I am using old Weihenstephaner, Hacker-Pschorr and Paulaner bottles. I have found the labels are the easiest to remove on these bottles than any other I have used...plus I like the treat inside before cleaning!
