I cold steep my coffee for 24 hours and use 2 cups coarse ground coffee with 4 cups boiled and cooled water. Produces a strong yet smooth brew that mingles nicely with 5 gal of imperial stout.

+1 on cold brewing the coffee in the fridge at least overnight. The amount varies according to the type of brew, the type of coffee and how much coffee flavor you're shooting for.

If you add the coffee into the bottling bucket or keg, you can put about 1/2 of it and then add a bit at a time while taking samples for tasting to get the desired balance.

When I use coffee I use a quart of coffee brewed according to the coffee in 5 gallons. Added at flame out.

I use 8 oz by weight of medium ground cold steeped for a strong coffee flavor in 5 gals. Many variables though, grind, roast level etc.

I think 6 oz med grind of a med to dark roast, cold steeped in 32-48 oz of water is a good starting point.

    This question is VERY subjective!

Is course grind your only option? Personally, I've found a pint of espresso thrown into the last 5 minutes boil on a 5 gallon batch turns out phenomenally well...

Wow. On my Breakfast Stout clone I used 4 oz of grounds (2 after flameout as a kinda hop stand, and 2 as a dry hop) and the coffee is VERY pronounced and delicious. Coffee amount is rather subjective and also depends on the strength of other flavors in the brew. Adding strong cold brewed (less acidic) coffee at packaging time to taste is the best way to dial it in. I am not sure how much coffee flavor fades over time though.
