I'm using a stainless racking cane and it took forever today to rack ~ 2.5 gallons from the carboy to the keg. Like ... 10-15 min? Felt like an eternity. Is that a normal amount of time? That's 20-30 min for a full 5 gal batch?

20 minutes seems about right for racking a 5g batch, but I do CO2 pushes and tend to keep the pressure modest to avoid potential shrapnel...

    Cheers!

Probably 5-10 mins with the 1/2" auto siphon

The time to rack to a second vessel will be decreased if the drop distance to the second vessel is increased.

I have a siphonless fermenter (spigot). It takes about 10-15 min. But I never actually timed it.

You issue is that you are not drinking enough home brew during the process. It should take a couple of hours!:tank::off:

this should be measured in beers - not minutes

    2 beers is about right

The actual transfer of beer from bucket to keg using a 1/2" SS racking cane, 1/2" silicone tubing, and about 3' drop usually takes only a few minutes (3-5 maybe) for 5 gallons. It's quick!

About 10 minutes with a 3/8" racking cane through a carboy cap, pushed with a little CO2. As long as the whole process doesn't create air bubbles (it doesn't), I don't mind the wait.

    1/2" racking cane & tube = 5-7 minutes?

Or about 2 beers. I think @soccerdad is on to something.

Issue here is relative elevation and gravity variation... ^_^

I force CO2 into my carboys and thus force beer through the cane and so it doesn't take very long at all... a few minutes?

It sounds like the OP doesn't have enough of a drop from the bottom of the fermenter to the top of the keg or vessel being transferred into.

I ferment 4.75 gallons in 5 gallon kegs (lagers) and close transfer with 10 PSI of co2. Probably takes 3-5 minutes. I know what the OP means by it taking longer than it seems like it should. I ferment hefes in buckets and use a 3/8" auto siphon...it's takes some time, in the 5-10 minute range.

Thanks everyone. Maybe I'll transition to pushing CO2 at some point.
