I've been using carboys and a chest freezer with a temperature controller for fermenting my beers, but I'd like to switch to conical fermenters in the future. How do you control fermentation temperature with a conical fermenter? I should think a stand up freezer would be the most economical method, unless you're fermenting more than one beer at a time.

Big freezer, or some kind of chiller coils.

Temp controlled fridge or stand up freezer... Unless you build something.

There are glycol jacket conicals. And I've heard of people doing an immersion coil inside the conical with glycol.

I keep my Brewers Hardware 20 gallon conical in an upright freezer. Set up an enclosure heater in there to provide heat when necessary. Then I use a BCS 462 to monitor the temp and turn the freezer or heater on/off as necessary. Works like a charm. Use the same setup for a sanke keg fermenter in another smaller upright freezer.

Wow, thats how you do it!! I have been pondering this very question, as sometime in the far future I hope to have more of a brewery and less of an ad hoc setup. Gravity feeds as I get older would be nice, but controlling the temps in a conical has always stumped me.

Hoping they come up with some cheaper options in the future, but this looks like a great option if you have the coin.

I've been using this water chiller i bought used: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0048IVBT4/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

i find it chills the water faster as the cold coils are in contact with the water rather then waiting for the cold air in the freezer to chill a tank of water. I have the output of the chiller going directly to the chiller coils inside my conical and it brings the temps down nicely.
