Should work. Alcohol lamps are pretty basic. A hole in the top of a ball jar lid, with a wick of anything that will burn works.

I found in the garden section of a big box store a small oil lamp meant to burn citronella lamp oil like for a dinner party outside. It's small square and very solid. Works perfectly as a spirit lamp for yeast culturing and stuff like that.

A 4 oz mason jar would work well too I'd think. Anything but a fragile, clumsy light bulb.

Nice to have it the power goes out. You can use beer bottles too.

I've bought some of the cheap hurricane lanterns at Wally's and burn citronella oil in them when we camp. Since they're only about 6 bucks and work as well as they do, I see no reason to make something or look for other fuels. :)
