For what kind of beer? The answer's different if I'm brewing a Czech pils, a British bitter, an American IPA, a Belgian dark strong, or a Scottish ale.

Ditto. I buy what's available and the brand very often depends on the type of malt.

I also buy by the 50# sack, and have only gone through about 3 sacks. 1 Western 2-row, 1 Breiss 2-row, and 1 Pilsner.

    They all seemed to work.

Either Global or Best Malz or Castle, maybe Thomas Fawcett. I like Gambrinus too.;)

What ever the LHBS has ordered in the time I'm brewing. Talked to the owner and he only places an order every 3 months. It is shocking what he has sometimes, and what he runs out of. I often have to change the recipe while picking up the grains as what was there last month is gone this time.

I buy locally as much as possible so I get my grain from Colorado Malting Company in Alamosa, Colorado.

I use mainly Briess, but that's just because it's what the LHBS provides. All their stuff works fine, but my grain bill usually consists of grain from the country of the style I am making.

Thomas Fawcett, probably. Honestly, though, I've been happy with Munton's, Weyermann, Castle and GlobalMalt as well, and I haven't tried other maltsters.

Muntons, because that's what the LHBS stocks for British grains, and British grains is what I need 90% of the time.

I wouldn't use Muntons if I wasn't perfectly satisfied with it. I'm currently using Thomas Fawcett due to a group buy arranged by the great folks on HBT, and I'm equally satisfied with that. I'm certainly not going to try buying bulk grains on-line, at approximately twice the price that I can get it locally.

    Pie. I like pie.

Seriously, this sort of poll is useless. If what you need is a screwdriver, no amount of "a recent poll showed HBT members preferred Craftsman hammers" is worth beans.

Use the tool for the job.

If you really want to learn something, ask questions like, "Which pils (or pale, or crystal, or...) malt do you prefer?" Even those results won't really mean anything, because what works for me and my palate might not work for you and your palate but at least you'll be comparing apples to apples. This poll compares apples and galvanized wingnuts.

I like Muntons, but typically use Briess. SWMBO is supposed to buy me 50# for my B-day so I will be using Muntons in many of my future beer recipes.

    Salute! :mug:

And because which pale malt I use varies based on what I'm brewing and what flavor I'm going for.

Just in the things that I personally have kegged or bottled at the moment, I've got brews using Marris Otter, Golden Promise, Briess 2-row, and Weyermann Pale. Subbing Briess into my British IPA or Golden Promise into my Centennial IPA wouldn't make the same beer.

I mostly use GW Pale because my last bag cost $28.70 . Can't tell the difference between it and all the other pales I've used. I think I'd have to do a side by side lightly hopped SMASH comparison to find the difference and why would it matter if I did not want to drink those?

this is interesting, I did this same poll over on a Professional brewers forum and not one person claims they use Briess in the operation as a base malt......hhhmmmm????
