Ok. So I just got a 5 gallon cooler to mash with and figured out I need to switch to fly sparge.

Please give me your opinion. I have about 4ft of cpvc to do mods with.

Also, how fast should it take to get through 5 gallons of sparge water?

Why do you think you need to switch to fly sparging? Many batch sparge with coolers with great results.

    Only 5 gallon. Too small

I tried batch with last with only a 9 lb grain bill and was a pain. One day I will get a bigger cooler, when I see it for$5 at thrift store

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but why would you need a bigger cooler to batch sparge? If you can mash in it, you can batch sparge in it.

Mash > drain first runnings > add sparge water > drain second runnings.

I'd think you could even split it into 3 if you can't fit the full volume of the sparge into the tun at once.

    But what do I know, I'm a fly-sparger!

With say a 13lb grain bill you're looking at 2.5 gal of water just from absorbtion. Add in the grains and you don't have much room left to batch sparge.

Plenty of room to batch sparge. Drain first runnings. Add water stir...drain second runnings. On a bigger batch perhaps a third running.

13 lbs of grain is probably a bit too much for a 5 gal mash tun. 13 lbs of grain with 3.6 gal of water would give a mash volume of ~4.75 gal, but at only ~1.1 qt/lb grain ration, which is pretty thick. It could be done, but is pushing things pretty tight. 12 lbs or less shouldn't be a problem, but most mashes would require 2 batch sparges to get ~7 gal pre-boil volume (assuming target 5.5 gal to fermenter.)

Yes, but this doesn't change anything with regard to batch vs. fly sparging.

I think the OP was trying to add all the required water in a single batch so he thought he could only do small batches, fly sparge or get a larger cooler but as others noted this is not required. If he wants to fly sparge that's a different question.

So the whole fly vs batch sparge debate aside, should this setup work ok?

It should work fine up to about a 12 lb grain bill. After that your mash thickness will need to go below 1.25 qt/lb. If you can deal with a thicker mash, then you could do more grain.
