Hey guys, just wondering if it is possible to use any crushed barley from a farm or shop? Reason is I live in a country where home brewing is unheard of and importing the heavy grains is just too expensive. Any ideas?

If you wanted to just add crushed barley to your beer as a heading adjunct it would be fine as long as it was clean. If you mean to brew using that grain to provide the sugars to ferment, then you have to malt it first. Ask questions about home malting of grain and somebody that has done it will explain how and why not to.

Um, which country? Can you persuade a store near you to import the malted barley as part of a regular delivery and reduce the cost of importing?

You can also get enzymes to ferment the barley. We are working with this at work, and there is a difference in taste and body with 100% unmalted barley. But when you blend it down to 75% unmalted and 25% malt, there is slight differences, barely noticeable, at 50/50 blend, it would be hard to tell the difference.
Probably cheaper to get in a few vials of enzymes than bringing in 50 lbs of malt grain.

Oh ok, I misunderstood that all-malt brewing was malting your own barley. I checked a few youtube vids on it though and doesnt seem that complicated, basically just soaking it for a while before you use it. Or am I missing something here?

My country is Turkey, so the only way to import is from ebay or amazon out of europe. I checked a few options but usually the shipping is more expensive than the item, even for smaller items like electronics :/
