That is Soo funny I actually laughed out loud!

At least Abdelkader got in a few swings last game. I kind of miss the fighting, but love the winning.

Yeah, they are already sold out for this weekend! We were going to get together with some friends who's daughter is going to Western with my daughter. Guess we'll have to watch Friday night on Fox Sports Detroit!

Ironic because me and a guy from work were discussing how Ferris can't sell out that tiny arena they got even when they are playing well!

I lied. There are single seats available in the Dawg Pound section for those who care to put up with the obnoxious students.

Shutout 4 times in the last 9 games...where are all the Bruins fans? Dropped from 1st in goals for (2nd, GASP! Philly is #1) and goals against (4th)...barely clinging to that biggest differential stat. Haven't won consecutive games since Jan 10-12th, 4 of their last 7 wins have required shootouts, scoring a measly 2.24 goals for over the last 17 games, that's how long it's been since they've had consecutive wins. 7-9-1 over that stretch. Ugly!

Oh and on another note, back to the Shanahan thing...here's more of him phucking it up:

$2,500 fine for Staal on a very nasty boarding penalty, textbook definition of the play that causes serious injury. No major penalty, no match penalty, no suspension. And on the play, the Flyers Timonen gets an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for arguing that it should be a major and the Flyers don't even get a power play out of this. Absolute bullsh*t.

Yes, I realize the Flyers have been ugly over their last 16 games (how long it's been since winning consecutive games). They're 6-7-3 over that stretch. But they're scoring 3.06 goals per game over that stretch and their woes are due to mostly goaltending (shocking, I know) and the inability to win shootouts. 1-3 in the 4 shootouts over the last 16 games. They're giving up 3.13 goals against in those 16 games. They've given up 13 power play goals over those 16 games. Tough to win on a regular basis when you give up almost a whole freebie every game.

Hopefully the Kubina and Grossman additions help settle things in their own end.

He may be, but I think it is also a bit of the Phily thing. Let me draw a comparison. Last year for Pittsburgh, Fluery had a terrible start, had to be removed from several games, and the some of the talk in Pittsburgh (on radio and TV) was that he was done, they should just play Johnson, etc. His record was 1-6.

Instead of booing him, the Pittsburgh fans gave him a long standing ovation and he (Fluery) was able to turn things around. The result was a team that even without Crosby, Malkin and sometimes Staal (as well as a bunch of other players) was able to at least be competitve.

It's hard to image the Flyers getting the Stanley Cup regardless of the rest of the team if they don't have at least very solid play in goal.

[One other side note: Given that Fluery is getting $5.5 million per year (cap hit of $5 million), I'd say that is a much better deal for the Penguins vs. Ilya Bryzgalov's $10 million (5.67 million cap hit)). ]

Considering Brian Elliott is playing amazing and has a $600k cap hit through 2014...

The fans cheer when he plays well and when he looks like Swiss cheese, they let him know about it. He's generally been awful to mediocre this year. It's not an occasional off game like every player is going to have. It's not Tim Thomas and Rask getting no goal support, the Flyers are the highest scoring team in the league and haven't won consecutive games in their last 16 (ie almost 20% of the season in a single stretch). Goaltenders with 2.99 and 2.76 GAA is awful. Being in the bottom 5 in SV% is inexcusable. Bryz never gave the Flyers a chance on Saturday. It's on the defense (to a degree) when the goals are scored on rebounds or second/third chances. Bryz didn't make any first shot saves on those three goals. No screens, no deflections, no tips, just pathetic, team-deflating goals.

The fact neither one of them can win a shootout (I think Bob has one) is another issue. The pressure of one-on-one with the game on the line is a problem they haven't figured out.

Good points. The goalies job is to stop the first shot, and to try to prevent a rebound. The defense needs to make sure there aren't second or third shots.

Also, good point on the shootout. Fleury is frickin amazing doing them, one of the best in the league. Pittsburgh was only in the hunt last year because of their outstanding SO record.

I just did some searching, and found this interesting analysis:
http://www.nhl.com/stats/shootout_report.pdf. The flyers are sitting there in 29th, not so good.

Philly's terrible in the shootout. There have been losses this year where the goalie didn't make a single save. That's called not giving your team a chance.

I think Pittsburgh has 5 more shootout wins than Philly. That's the only reason they're tied. If the Flyers could win a shootout and maybe a season split with the Rangers, they'd lead the Eastern Conference. That's crazy considering how up and down they've been for the last few weeks.

What do you guys in the east think of the blues? Had a tough break against Chicago the other night, but we've been really good this year. As a long time blues fan, I haven't seen a team this exciting in 10+ years. The west seems to know about us and gets geared up to play us, but we are killing the east this year. Is it because we are surprising them?

A standing ovation for a goalie who's ****ting the bed? Well, that confirms it: the collective Pens fan-base is in fact retarded.

I've never understood the supposed need for such blind praise for professional athletes who are underperforming. Pretty sure Fleury would've bounced back from his slump without the applause for his crappy goaltending.

Hell, maybe all us Leaf fans shoudl start giving Reimer and Gustavsson standing o's - Stanley Cup for sure!!

It doesn't surprise me that you don't get it. Those "retarded" Pens and Steeler fans, who try to give support to players that are going through a rough spot on the field/rink. The fans weren't clapping for his crappy goal tending, they were clapping to show they still supported him. Maybe that's why the this mid-sized city has a football team that has won the super-bowl six times and a hockey team that has won the Stanley cup three times in the last 20 years. How's Toronto doing on that front?

No, he's too busy calling other fans "retarded" and booing his own team. :)

Well, regardless of the eventual outcome, it doesn't look like the Rangers have shut down Malkin. 1-0 Pens on a Malkin goal.

It's awesome they're out of the basement. It's good to see the Blues playing competitive hockey and challenge Detroit.

Yeah, I see the "we support you" point, but I will not applaud miserable play.

Just like tonight in Winnipeg - Flyers continue to score goals, 3 in this one, but special teams (3 PP goals against) and not getting the best goaltending (especially the 4th goal on the power play, a wrist shot from above the circles that was not screened) has them in a 3-4 hole after leading 2-1 at one point. To his credit, Bryz has made a couple really, really great looking glove saves (on a few shots that were going wide).

And the ridiculous save Pavelec just made on the Flyers power play saving an empty net goal as he was down and out is exactly what the Flyers never get from Bryz. Wait until you see the replay if you're not watching this game!

And there's another save on a one-time shot from just beside the net on a back door play. If the Flyers got goaltending like Winnipeg is getting in the third period, they'd probably have 90 points right now.

Simmonds extends his goal streak to 3 games tying it at 4 with 9.7 seconds left!!! Unreal. Pavelec couldn't keep making saves like he was throughout the third forever. 49 shots on goal for the Flyers. Finally got the tying goal through. OVERTIME!

Final results: Malkin gets 2 points (goal + assist). Fluery gets his 22nd shutout (to equal the Penguins record made by Tom Barrasso).

So much for your 2 points in the bag... :)

[For the record, Barrasso's shutouts were in an era where the Penguins were an offensive machine, but where defense was for the most part an after thought.]

Flyers win it in overtime. Old man Jagr still shows his skill. (Not a flyers fan, but they looked good in OT.)

They dominated most the game, just couldn't kill a penalty off or have Bryz make a key save before OT. He made on nice one on the single shot the Jets had in OT. Outshot 55-26 for the game, and 24-6 over the third period and OT.

Jagr's been pretty solid all year. 42 points in 50 games.

I'm just glad they didn't get to a shootout.
