A friend gifted me with a ton of el dorado and citra hops the other day. I'm so excited! Now, what do I do with them?

I think an IPA is in order. I have other hops on hand, most American hops varieties and a few English varieties.

I've never even tried el dorado hops, so I wonder what they would pair nicely with. They have a great aroma to them in the package- fruity and earthy both.

I need help coming up with a solid hopping for an IPA that would use some of these hops!

Sweet! I haven't tried el dorado yet but I'd use citra as a good foundation hop. It produces some great fruity (apricot/orange) flavor, but I've found that it needs some pine or dank to compliment. It's great at creating a huge hoppy presence, but needs 1-2 more hops on top to provide some depth. Maybe citra, dorado, simcoe?

Good point. I don't like citra as a sole hop, and I have tons of simcoe.

What did you end up doing with them? I just bottled an El Dorado/Amarillo IPA that I dry hopped with 1 oz each of Centennial and El Dorado. (5 gallon)

Nothing yet! But that's why I replied to this thread today. I'm brewing on Monday, and need an APA. I made a different IPA last time, but on Monday I want to make a pale ale, using Wyeast 1272 as the yeast, and put together a recipe with the el dorado hops.

So, I decided I needed an American red (amber). I totally changed my mind from an IPA at the beginning!

Here's what I'm thinking for tomorrow (10.5 gallon batch):
    15 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US 74.1 %
    2 lbs Munich Malt (9.0 SRM) 9.9 %
    1 lbs 8.0 oz Caramel Malt - 40L (Briess) 7.4 %
    12.0 oz Victory Malt (25.0 SRM) 3.7 %
    8.0 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 75L (75.0 SRM) 2.5 %
    8.0 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (120.0 SRM) 2.5 %

    2.00 oz chinook [13.9 %] - Boil 15.0 min 28.0 IBUs
    2.00 oz Citra [13.80 %] - Boil 5.0 min 9.2 IBUs
    2.00 oz El Dorado [15.30 %] - Steep/Whirlpool

    OG: 1.052
    IBUs- 37+ steeping/whirlpool hops (50?)

I wanted a hopbursted, reddish colored beer with tropical fruit notes. I have no idea what to expect from el dorado hops, especially combined with citra!

That recipe looks fantastic. Good luck! I've got an IPA using El Dorado, Azacca, and Simcoe - should be ready to drink by Wednesday. My first time using El Dorado.

Can't wait to see what everyone thinks about El Dorado. I think both of the two beers listed sound great from what the hop is described as.
    And smells for that matter.

I brewed a DIPA solely hopped with El Dorado a few months ago. Lots of tropical fruit taste from it, strong watermelon flavor. I liked it but by it's self it was something I couldn't drink lots of in a row.

I've a partigyled imperial stout in secondary now which has El Dorado as aroma hops, paired off with Magnum as bittering. Still raw and unpalatable, but I'll make sure I leave a note here when it's ready.

The wort smelled, looked and tasted great- so that's a good sign I think.

I'll make sure to report back at kegging, to give my impressions of el dorado hops!

I have had a few El Dorado beers and brewed one as well. They taste like cherry/watermelon jolly ranchers. A very unique and interesting flavor, but not something I will be using again.

Both citra and el dorado are very sweet in flavor and do really well in a pale. If you wanted to do an ipa, I'd either throw in some columbus or summit (something obviously not so sweet) or crank up the abv and do an imperial, as sweetness from hops does much more pleasantly in a beer with a bit more alcohol to compare against it. Either way, both are very unique hops and should do well for a summer drink. :)

It was good, but weird at first.

I served this to a bunch of HBT friends- Pappers, Tiber_Brew, Randar, Conpewter, Homercidal and a few others- and their first instinct was "it's weird". But then it sort of grew on people and most said they liked it.

El dorado hops are weird- sort of a Jolly Ranchers candy fruitiness- but once you get past the first few sips of weird, it's pretty successful.

I still don't know what do to with the rest of the hops, though.

I made a wheat beer and hopped with el dorado. I thought it was really good.

Hmm. I see how that could be a good combo. Did you did a 50% wheat/50% barley with a little crystal malt and American ale yeast?

Yep. What you said, plus honey malt. Even with all of that, it wasn't fruity or cloying; in fact, it was a delicious session beer.

<-- It's in my recipe pulldown.

I love El Dorado hops. I have done 2 IPAs with them alone, but going to try them mixed with Nelson sauvin next.

    +1 on this

Bump up to 1.080 and hops like citra and el dorado shine on their own when the alcohol balances it out, at least that's how I do my IIPAs, sweet fruity hops. I've used both in pales and bitters and they go really nicely with Glacier and Warrior. Let us know what you do with the remainder Yooper.
