dumb pump question

I hear that you shouldn't run a march or chugger pump dry. How does one avoid doing this when transfereing from one vessel to another?

for example to dough in, when you transfer from the hlt to the mash tun, and want to transfer every drop wont you run the pump dry momentarily when the liquid in the tubes move into the mash tun?

 

Obviously you don't wander off when draining through the pump, but a second or two of the screamin' pump mimis isn't going to kill it, the innards are still wet...

From my experience, that wont hurt the pump since there is still some moisture in the pump, but you should stop the pump as soon as the liquid stops.

 

as long as there is liquid to lubricate the ceramic crown bearing that the impeller sits on, its not too big of a deal. like everyone said, it can be run for short periods of time with some air in it. just dont start it up and run it for long when its bone dry.
