dumb bottling question

    I'm getting ready to rack my first all grain batch, and I'm getting a head start on prepping my bottles. Is out good practice to wash the bottles in the dishwasher a few weeks in advanced? I want sure if the detergent would have a negative effect on the beer.

    If you do put them in the dishwasher, then run it with out the detergent. The detergent can have a negative effect.

    If they are really dirty then just soak them in some oxiclean or pbw.

    I've never used a dishwasher for my bottles but I do soak them in oxyclean if there is crud inside, otherwise I just sanitize them with starsan on bottling day

    I was going put them in for the sanitation cycle before bottling. They were rinsed out after being drank port of, so they aren't that dirty. Just trying to cover all my bases

    Yea I have same question. Can I just rum them through cycle w/o soap. Them soak in starsan

    A few weeks in advance yields little benefit unless you plan on using sanitizer as a next step.

    Why not run it the night before you bottle and leave the dishwasher closed until bottling?

    I don't like to use the dishwasher, however, and would rather soap and water, triple rinse with hot water, then squirt with sanitizer but nothing wrong with the night before or morning of!

    If you saw the inside of my dishwasher, you'd agree that using the dishwasher is not a great idea.

    I rinse twice with HOT water (my tap runs at 140+F), soak in same until I can pull the labels off, then store in boxes until time to use. I fill them without any other sanitizing (GASP!).

    I know it's not optimal practice, but I get away with it without problems. As I grow up, I'll probably transition to a pre-filling rinse with iodophor water. Or maybe just sacrifice a chicken, or something.

    as long as there free from visible crud then i would say you dont need to use the dishwasher. just a starsan bath.

    If you really worried about getting them free of micro you could put them in you oven at 300degrees for 15 min or so.. just make sure that there are no labels or water in them. also just let them cool down in the oven. It will take a while for them to get to room temp again. I have only did this once when i had a infected batch and didn;t want to take any chances.

    I've done three different batches of bottling brew using my dishwasher to sanitize with no odd taste. I do rinse out my bottle with hot water after drinking one and store the bottle until I'm ready to bottle. On bottling day I run sanitize cycle with detergent in the dishwasher then allow the bottles to cool down to touch by slightly opening the dishwasher. I do rinse each bottle with hot water again before going in to the dishwasher.

    Wow, [TravisT], you really showed those bacteria who's the boss. I'll have to remember that trick. You're right about letting them cool with the oven door closed, you might have a box of broken glass otherwise.
