Assumed I would just get another 5 lb one, but wanted the concensus.

I find that my 5 lber doesn't want to push 53 psi for burst carbing unless it is FULL.

SO. Another 5 lber, or trade in my 5 lber towards a 10 lber (I get full retail).

i am about sold on the spare, because I have time to refill, not "EMERGENCY!!!!!! EMPTY!!!!!"

(and YES, another 5 lber would double my co2 capacity either way, I realize that, spare or all in one is the question)

i know it's not an option but I'd buy a new/used 10lb tank and keep the spare

not sure why you need to carb at 53psi but if you get another 5lb tank who's to say you won't have the same problem? perhaps it's a regulator issue?

a spare is a must imo - you will always run out of gas when you need it most

hmmm......The welding place will give me $93 towards the 10 lb bigger tank ($179...I think) or sell me another 5 lb for $93.

that seemed awfully fair, but a perusal of the classifieds makes sense.

    Thanks!

OT: I chill my beer, pressurize to 53 PSI and unhook it. It carbs in 48 hours or so with NO shaking or moving.

def check the classifieds here or buy from the vendors here - those prices seem pretty high for a new tank - keg connection has a 5#aluminum tank for $65 and i'm sure you could do as well or better with a little work

I'd also check your local craigslist - lots of people sell them with aquarium equipment etc

I vote for getting a #10 and using the #5 as an emergency spare. I used to get by with a #5 then i saw some #20's going for $20 on craigslist.

    I once had a thought,

I have a 5lb and a 10 and would like to pick up a 20. refills get cheaper as size goes up, not to have an emergency when the tank goes dry and having another tank and regulator for racking to kegs is priceless.
Of course if you have a leak and lose 20 lbs there's a down side too!

having a small tank is also nice for portability or using to flush out carboys etc

I vote keep the 5# and get a 10# (or bigger). Or if you don't want to spend that much money just go with two 5#. Good to have a spare for when your other tank runs out randomly. If your welding store is anything like mine they only exchange (no refills) the 5# tanks and they're always out the day I want one so the spare keeps me in business.

More OT: Did you calculate that or just figure it out? About what carb level does that get you?

Calculated. It actually peters out to 9 psi or so at the end and takes an hour or so at 13psi to be perfectly carbed. something about the pressure levelling out at the end, any higher than 53 and it overcarbs, but 53 leaves it a hair short.

Paintball out the ASS on craigslist.com

What does this mean, exactly? Stolen stuff?

Agree sounds like a regulator problem or the tank is too cold. I use a 10lb tank for a portable compressed air source set at 90PSI (regulator for high flow rates) and have had no problems yet.

If you still want to get another tank I would get a second 5lb tank. It is easier to store and transport.

That sounds good. The welding place seems to be the only game in town.

Their is a minimum charge of $20 for any fill, and it's only $25 to fill a 20lb tank.

The local place only charges 8.95 to fill my 5 lber, but 20lbs for $25 would be a better deal.

Possibly. I know the welding shops near me have all their rental tanks stamped. Maybe the guy is just too lazy to make the trip for his deposit.
    OR
My personal favorite: the tanks were rented out by a shop that went out of business and now no one wants to fill them because they are a stamped rental tank.

It does make a difference where the tank came from, if it is not a customer owned tank, not only will places like Airgas not fill it, but they may take it and return it to it's owner. Also, the tank must have a current valve and hydro test or it may be an additional fee.

Where does it say flammable? Are you saying that because the top is red? That's probably due to the Coca-cola use. CO2 is almost anti-flammable...

I've bought four 10# co2 tanks from craigslist. Prices ranged from free to $30. Keep an eye out until something happens. You have to be fairly diligent in searching though.

They use co2 in fire extinguishers, so I can tell you that co2 is not flammable. If the tank belongs to Coke, it will always belong to Coke. The tank needs to be costumer owned. Do you ever see 20-30 huge tanks locked to a pole on construction sights, Joe-smow can't walk into AirGas and try to fill those tanks, the guys there may confiscate the tank back.

...and other places will gladly exchange them, even if they're out of date. Actually, airgas exchanged an empty steel tank for a newer full aluminum one for me.

I know that Co2 is NOT flammable. The seller says that the ONLY thing that the tank says is "Flammable"

Sinc Co2 is NOT flammable, I wondered if the tank held something else.
