Need some pointers on buying used ball valve kegs for home brewing. Really green only been brewing for 6 months and am keen to start kegging my beer. Is surface rust an issue on the outside?

Usually As long as the kegs hold pressure the quality doesn't matter too much. But I'd be a little worried if they were rusting. I always thoughts the kegs are stainless steel

Try poking around your local craigslist and see what you can find... although ball lock kegs seem to be getting more expensive on the secondary markets.

Also, try Adventures in Homebrew. They've got some pretty good deals for used kegs. I recently bought a couple from them and have had no issues. They guarantee the kegs will hold pressure.

You can try pin lock kegs too. They are much cheaper, and there's no difference in quality. You just use a different type of disconnect for the posts.

Every once in a while Midwest Supplies has keg deals. I got 4 for $99 last year on a sale special, although I use pin lock.

Buy pin lock and swap the lids for one with manual release

Yeah they're on a local classifieds site, I also thought they were stainless but there appears to be surface rust around the top. Cheers guys you've been very helpful! Will go buy them
