co2 leaky

hey ya'll... so new years, amirite?

ok, im a little schwastey facety off of apfelwein, but i'm finishing it to keg my pale ale tomorrow

but yea, my co2 regulator seems to leak when i turn it up, but after i turn it down some, the leaking hiss goes away... whats up with that? does it just need to be cleaned or is there something more sinister?

i hope someone is checking this b/w tonite and next year to help me out... thx!

"Leak when I turn it up" this with adding pressure turning the thumb screw clockwise raising the pressure? Only thing you should hear is gas passing thru the regulator out to the lines.

"after I turn it down some, thr leaking his goes away", this is normal as your bleeding off excess gas pressure until hitting the lowered set pressure, hissing should stop once this lower set pressure in the lines match what you adjusted the regulator lower to.
Now creeping up pressures above set the diaphragm seat is leaking, a single stage regulator will creep up in secondary pressure a little as the tank pressure decreases. Two stage regulators prevent this pressure increase when the bottle pressure decreases.

 

Teflon tape on the outside of the connections? No. On the inside, I have no clue.

How does the gas sound when its just going into the lines? I may be mistaking the hissing noise...

I'm not sure if its a single stage or a two stage regulator... I just know if has two gauges... the tank pressure and the keg pressure.

 

Brass flare mated to inverted flare connections are bare no teflon, flare contact is your seal, NPT threads yes.
Gas sound will be a short inrush until regulated pressure is established, regulator will also hiss as it passes gas, not you passing gas.
Tape on MNPT fitting only not FNPT and be careful not getting sheared off tape inside the lines.
I see people using tape on flare nut fittings under the nut, totally useless and a waste dreaming for a bandaide fix at best. First time tightening flare fittings they seat to each other making the perfect leak free seal, this will require ttightening down with a high torque, later once they flare is mated to each other less torque is required to seal.
