I'm wondering if it is possible to keg just half a batch, I'd like to bottle half and keg the rest. Would I need to purge the keg with CO2 before filling?

Yup, you can certainly do that. The CO2 purge would probably be a good idea. Another method is to keg the whole batch, then bottle from the with a counterpressure filler or beer gun.

OR.......................you could buy a 2.5 or a 3 gallon keg. They are a little spendy, but great for half batches.

This will only work if you keg half a batch and send the other half batch to us HBT regulars for testing.:mug:

the only down side to kegging half a batch in a full size keg is you use mor Co2 that usual. First to purg ethen to fill the big head space and keep pressure to carbonate. But hey Co2 is cheap so why not.
