Enough of my chinook hops are ready for harvest and I want to use them in a wet-hopped IPA. I like simple recipes, so I have 12 lbs Rahr 2-row and 1 lb Briess 40, with 1056 yeast and I'm mainly looking for advice on how to use the hops. I have an e-BIAB setup with a 15g kettle and a plate chiller, no pumps. I usually use a hopsock for all pellet hops and I find that even in the sock they get agitated very well during the boil, and the sock keeps all the junk out of my chiller. I'm a bit concerned with using the sock with whole cone hops though just because of the sheer volume I need to use might fill the sock and decrease exposure and utilization. My thoughts on hop schedule:

    0.75 oz. Chinook (60 min) - pellet
0.5 oz. Chinook (10 min) - 3 oz wet whole cone
0.5 oz. Chinook (1 min) - 3 oz wet whole cone
0.5 oz. Chinook (whirlpool) - 3 oz wet whole cone

My preference is to throw the whole hops right into the kettle and I'm stopping at the LHBS on the way home to pick up a bazooka screen. My other thought is to use multiple hopsocks, but then I'm left to swirl the bags around manually during the whirlpool.

Any comments or advice (from experience) on the hop schedule above or using whole cone hops would be GREATLY appreciated!

I would use multiple hop bags. The leaves from whole hops tend to come off and clog those bazooka screen worse than pellets ever could

Thanks m00ps! I was planning on using my spoon to clear the screen if needed, but I bet that would just squish the leaves through the screen and into my chiller anyway. Does the hop schedule look ok? I was using a 6:1 wet:pellet ratio and will use the pellets for bittering with all of the flavor/aroma coming from the late edition whole hops.

I think the hop schedule looks pretty good. Great call on not wasting your wet hops on the 60min addition. Im a huge fan of giant whirlpool additions for about all of my hop character in IPAs so I'd probably use another oz of pellet chinook at 10 and then just dump your entire harvest in for an hour long hopstand/whirlpool for maximum juicy wet hop goodness. Ill usually do 10 or more oz in a hopstand with only good results

I brewed this on 8/24 and kegged it the other day without dry hopping to see how much of the hop character came through with the late boil additions. Before I get to results, let me review the back end of the brew day. I have an electric BIAB system (5500W Camco with PID) and I use hop socks for all additions including irish moss to keep crap out of my plate chiller. This time was no different, I put all of my hops including the fresh hop cones into the hop sock. After draining through my plate chiller, I noticed my element was covered in scorch! This was the first time this has ever happened, and the first time I've used whole cone hops with this system. I can't help but relate the two. Further, my wife made dog treats with this spent grain and they don't taste burnt. Yeah, I ate some. woof, woof.

I might as well name this beer Burnt IPA because it tastes like I ate some char off the bottom of my oven. Sure, there's hoppy flavor but I can't get past the char taste throughout the beer. This might be my first dump.

Any of you electric brewers used wet/dry whole cone hops as late boil editions? What was your process and outcome?

hmm, I made a black IPA recently that has that flavor (luckily its not a regular IPA). It came from one of my hop bags that got lodged under the heating element and scorched it. Got all stuck to it and everything. Im hoping itll age out

I do electric BIAB and never had any issues with whole cone hops though usually I save them for the keg. But im guessing something got stuck to the heating element at some point. I could smell it while i was boiling but just figued it was my nose since black IPAs do have some roast. I keep a spoon in the kettle now to stir everything now and then

Guess I'll be using my homegrown hops in whirlpools and dry hopping from now on.
