    Hi all,

I'm looking for a good way to raise my brew kettle slightly off the surface of my glass-top stove and hopefully reduce some of the discoloration I'm getting, which may be due to male extract syrup burning as it hits.

I've read in a few Papazian books that a cookie-cooling rack is the way to go here but I'm hesitant to use something that will melt. Does anyone have any recommendations for brand or material? Is this even a problem?

And no, setting up a gas burner isn't an option, I live in the city and have no personal outdoor space.

check kitchen supply stores for STOVE TRIVET or HEAT DIFFUSER

they should specify whether you can use them on glass-tops

Have you thought about a table-top induction heater? I have no idea if they get hot enough... but it's something to research and consider...

Is the discoloration on the kettle or the stove that you're worried about?

I am both excited and ashamed that I am the first to point this out.

Took me way longer than it should have to realize what you were saying there.

To edmanster, it's the beer itself that's discolored. My last pils looked like maarzen.

The great things about all heat sources is that you can control how much to put into it! Set your temp lower! If it will boil at a lower setting then it will help with less darkening or scorching! Helped a friend dial in his because he always had a boil over when adding hops doing 3 gal extract boils for 5 gal yeld! I make 5 gal AG batches on my glass stove top but start with around 7-7.5 gal at the start! I've boiled 10 with water! There's a lot of power in those heating elements! Here's a vid with 8gal of wort :mug:
