Beer in fermenter - is gravity same at different areas?

    Just wondering if the gravity is the same throughout the carboy. Or does the alcohol sink to the bottom so to get an accurate gravity would you need to stir the beer or take multiple readings from different areas?

    Just curious on this.

    Hmm. Why? Alcohol is apparently a dense molocule and I'd assume the beer at the bottom would be higher than the top.

    I think its a homogenous solution, or else bottles stored in one place for more than a few days would stratify and start to look really weird. And your first sip would be all water while the last sip would be like drinking liquor

    Well I know there are very strong bonds between water and alcohol so it wouldn't be water at the top, but perhaps a 9% beer is 5% at the top and 12% at the bottom, something like that.

    Prefermentation it is possible to see stratification.

    During fermentation the activity keeps everything mixed.

    Post fermentation everything has gone into solution minus some obvious particulates.
