    G'day HBT,

I have a the following leftovers from previous brew sessions:

    9lbs Maris Otter
    9lbs Bohemian Pilsner
    1lb CaraMunich 2 (60)
    3oz Cascade
    2pk. Notty
    1pk US-05

I was thinking of using all the grain for a 10g batch and adding 2 pounds of instant rice. I have never used the rice before but I have read it ferments well and dries out the beer a bit...

    Since I don't have a lot of hops I thought I try:

    - 3/4oz FWH on a 90min boil (Again, FWH's is something new to me also).
    - .5oz 20mins
    - .5oz 5mins
    - 1 1/4oz dry hop

What do you think? Should I hold off and wait until I can pick up some more supplies and mimic a better recipe on here or do you think this will turn out ok?

    Thanks!

Instant rice... maybe look up cereal mashing. Not sure if it applies here, but it might. I don't think I've ever heard of a beer made with Maris Otter and Pilsner Malts, but I made a barleywine with equal parts MO and Pilsner DME and it turned out alright. At the time I thought it was goofy but the guy at my LHBS said to go for it.

I'm not a big hops guy, but I would guess that people who can help you with that might ask what kind of hops you're thinking about using. EDIT: I see that it is cascade now.

Waiting for certain ingredients to make a recipe is fine if you want, but that part depends on you. Are you someone who likes to stick to making certain styles? Do you have a lot of beer in your pipeline? Do you want to brew for a contest? Then yeah, you might want to wait. If you don't mind sinking some ingredients into an experimental, freezer-cleaner beer then you can go for it.

    Thanks Kent,

I am rather new to this sport so as long as it tastes good, I am not necessarily trying to adhere to any particular style here and I am not looking to win any awards for my efforts, a cold tasty beers fine for me!
Will the Maris Otter and Pilsner not work well together?
If not, I could do a 5g batch with one grain only... But 10g is better then 5g (unless it tastes bad, haha)

From the one time I've made a beer with MO and Pils DME, I think that they can work well together. From that one experience I'd say that I get a ton more MO character than Pils, which isn't surprising.

Have you plugged this into brewing software like BrewersFriend (browser-based) or BeerSmith? Do you know the predicted OG, FG, and IBUs?

    OG: 1.060
    FG: 1.014
    ABV: 6.05%
    IBU: 13

I guess as long as Maris Otter and Pilsner don't clash, I will just give it a shot and see what happens...

    Thanks Kent
