I have no idea how it fit into the little holes on the airlock lid, but it did, what is the chance it will affect the mead, or should I be ok?

If the airlock was full i.e. with water/sulphite solution etc, then it was doing its job correctly. So no chance.....

I use the "s" shape type, I put water in it and half a campden tablet.

Nice...way to man up and eat the little bastard! I usually use a bottle of cheap vodka and if they get in there they're snack!
