    Hi Brewers!

I converted the 52qt coleman cooler into a mash tun a couple of months ago, and have used it in two brews since. Both times I've noticed a small leak coming from where the larger metal washer (2 piece weldless ball valve kit) meets the outside of the cooler. When I purchased the cooler I didn't see the rubber seal that allegedly comes with the cooler, only the three-part spigot that is included.
I've tried tightening (within reason), more PTFE tape, and changing the order, however I think a rubber seal, or gasket, is required for both sides of the cooler. Does anyone know the appropriate size of rubber part for this cooler, and 1/2inch tap?

    Many thanks!

Your leak must be coming from inside the cooler. The liquid is running from the inside gasket along the nipple of the valve to the external gasket/washer. If you put a new gasket on the outside you may not see liquid, but the leak will persist. The liquid will end up in between the plastic layers in the insulation. Make sure your washer and gasket are seated properly on the inside.

I have a 52qt Coleman Xtreme cooler. I put a 1" (or thereabout) long PVC bushing between the inside and outside wall, so I can clamp down on the bulkhead nuts. Even with a large silicone washer against the inside of the cooler plus a large SS washer for even force/pressure, I still got some leakage, so I siliconed the whole lot, then tightened it just enough. Never seen a leak since.

Apparently the drain channel, where the bulkhead goes through is NOT perpendicular to the walls of the cooler, there's a slight downslope angle to it. Therefore the washer and nuts are not perpendicular to the walls either, preventing a good seal. Yours may have the same problem.

Any chance of seeing a picture? And when you say you used silicone what does that refer to?
